Lore
Biology
Azumarill is a blue, egg-shaped rabbit, 0.8 m tall and 28.5 kg, with a white belly and bubble-like white markings that camouflage it in water. Its long red-lined ears are rolled up in the water to stay dry, and the Pokédex calls them superb sensors for what is moving in fast rivers. The tip of its tail glows when it attacks or is excited.
Behaviour
Azumarill stays in the water all day, since it can hold plenty of air in its body. On sunny days it floats on the surface and sunbathes. The Pokédex says it makes air-filled bubbles to cover playing Azurill, and balloons that let a drowning Pokémon breathe.
Habitat
The Pokédex lists rivers and lakes. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's West Province and Casseroya Lake, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Huge Power doubles its Attack, so a base 50 hits like a base 100, Thick Fat halves Fire and Ice damage, and the hidden Sap Sipper soaks up Grass moves for an Attack boost. It uses Play Rough, Aqua Tail, Superpower and Liquidation. With 100 HP and 80 in both defences it is a bulky physical attacker.
Name origin
Azumarill may combine 'azure' or azul marino (Spanish for 'navy blue') with Marill and 'rill'. The Japanese name is Marilli (マリルリ), which may combine marui ('round') or mari ('ball') with ruri ('lapis lazuli', a deep blue stone).
Design inspiration
Azumarill may be a rabbit crossed with a beach ball or lifebuoy, and Bulbapedia suggests swamp rabbits, which take readily to water, and the countershaded colouring of sharks and penguins. It may also draw on the moon rabbit legend, and Bulbapedia reads Huge Power as a pun on 'fortifying mochi'. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Azumarill evolves from Marill at level 18 and ends the Azurill line.
In the games
In Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Gates to Infinity, Azumarill runs the Request Counter, and the species first appeared in Gold and Silver. In Scarlet and Violet it also appears in 4-star Tera Raid Battles.
In the anime
Trixie's Azumarill debuted in 'Love, Totodile Style', where both Ash's Totodile and Trixie's Golduck fell for her. Jackson's Azumarill battled Ash at the Silver Conference in 'Tie One On!' and lost to Pikachu's Thunder.
