Marill official artwork

Marill is a Water/Fairy-type Pokémon, the Aqua Mouse Pokémon, number 183 (#0183) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the Johto region. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 8.5 kg.

Marill is the Aqua Mouse Pokémon, a bouncy blue water-dweller with an oil-filled tail tip that works as a float. Its water-repellent fur dries almost instantly, so it never gets cold, even after swimming in a cold sea.

Lore

Biology

Marill is a nearly spherical, two-legged blue rodent, 0.4 m tall and 8.5 kg, with a white belly, round red-lined ears and a zigzag black tail. The tail tip is a bubble-like ball of oil lighter than water, which acts as a buoy. The ears are sensitive enough to pick up distant sounds, and the water-repellent fur lets it swim fast without being slowed.

Behaviour

Marill is an enthusiastic swimmer. The Pokédex says it anchors its tail to a tree trunk while fishing beside a fast stream, and a lone tail bobbing on the surface means Marill is diving. The tail ball can glow when it attacks.

Habitat

The Pokédex lists the water's edge. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Paldea's South, East and West Provinces, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Diet

The Pokédex says it eats plants that grow on river bottoms.

Powers

Marill has Thick Fat, which halves Fire and Ice damage, Huge Power, which doubles its Attack, and the hidden Ability Sap Sipper. It starts with Water Gun, Rollout and Defense Curl, then learns Bubble Beam, Aqua Tail and Play Rough. Its Attack and Special Attack are a feeble 20 each, so it leans on its 70 HP until it evolves.

Name origin

Marill may combine mar ('sea' in Spanish and Portuguese) with 'rill', a small stream. The Japanese name is Maril (マリル), which may come from marui ('round') or mari ('ball').

Design inspiration

Marill may be a mouse crossed with a beach ball or lifebuoy, and Bulbapedia notes that its body and ears recall the shape of a water molecule. It might draw on water rats such as the European water vole, and its name, Shiny colours and tail could point to marimo, spherical lake algae. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Marill evolves from Azurill with high friendship and into Azumarill at level 18.

In the games

Marill plays Azurill's older brother in Pokémon Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness, and the species first appeared in Gold and Silver.

In the anime

Lyra's Marill was her principal partner and first appeared in 'An Egg Scramble!', and Tracey's Marill debuted in 'The Crystal Onix'. Five more form a team for the Fire and Rescue Grand Prix in 'The Fire-ing Squad!'.

Fun facts

  • Fans often called it 'Pikablu' before Gold and Silver came out, and Topps' trading cards for the first film used that name too.
  • Its name was once spelled 'Marril' on some merchandise for the first film.
  • Bulbapedia notes that before Generation VI the Azurill family were the only known Pokémon that could have Huge Power.

Pokédex entries

Even after Marill swims in a cold sea, its waterrepellent fur dries almost as soon as Marill leaves the water. That's why this Pokémon is never cold. (Shield)

This Pokémon uses its round tail as a float. The ball of Marill's tail is filled with nutrients that have been turned into an oil. (Sword)

When fishing for food at the edge of a fast-running stream, Marill wraps its tail around the trunk of a tree. This Pokémon's tail is flexible and configured to stretch. (Sapphire, Alpha Sapphire)

Marill's oil-filled tail acts much like a life preserver. If you see just its tail bobbing on the water's surface, it's a sure indication that this Pokémon is diving beneath the water to feed on aquatic plants. (Ruby, Omega Ruby)

The tip of its tail is filled with oil that is lighter than water, so it acts as a float. (Pearl, Y)

The fur on its body naturally repels water. It can stay dry, even when it plays in the water. (Crystal, X)
