Bellossom official artwork

Bellossom is a Grass-type Pokémon, the Flower Pokémon, number 182 (#0182) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the Johto region. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 5.8 kg.

Bellossom looks like a hula dancer in a grass skirt, and the Pokédex says its dance is a ritual to call out the sun. Its flowers are even lovelier if it evolved from a really smelly Gloom.

Lore

Biology

Bellossom is a green plant with round blue eyes, red cheek markings and two bright red blooms on its head. Its green and yellow waist leaves look like a grass skirt. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 5.8 kg. The Pokédex says its petals make a pleasant ringing sound when it rubs them together, and that it closes them to sleep at night.

Behaviour

Bellossom gather and dance, especially when cloudy weather drags on or when the rainy season ends and warm sunlight draws them out. The Pokédex says it leaves the forest where it was born to form groups with other Bellossom, and the Scarlet entry says the Sun Stone has made it active by day.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is grassland, and one entry says it is plentiful in the tropics. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by trade or in The Indigo Disk's Coastal Biome and Torchlit Labyrinth and 4-star Tera Raids, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Ability Chlorophyll doubles its Speed in strong sunlight, and the hidden Ability Healer can cure a status condition in an ally. It boosts its stats with Quiver Dance and attacks with Petal Dance, Giga Drain and Moonblast. With a base Special Defense of 100 and Defense of 95, it is sturdy.

Name origin

Bellossom may combine 'bell', 'belle' or the Spanish and Italian bello and bella ('beautiful') with 'blossom'. The Japanese name is Kireihana (キレイハナ), perhaps built from hana ('flower') plus kirei ('beautiful') and rei ('bell').

Design inspiration

Bellossom looks like a take on the stereotypical hula dancer, with a leaf skirt like a grass skirt and flowers like the plumeria worn in the hair. The red flowers recall Rafflesia keithii, tying it to Gloom, and its shape and ringing may nod to a bell. These are fan readings, not official statements.

Evolution notes

Gloom evolves into Bellossom when exposed to a Sun Stone.

In the games

Bellossom arrived in Gold and Silver, where the only way to get one was to evolve a Gloom, and it has no major story role.

In the anime

Bellossom first appeared in the anime series in 'Flower Power', where Bailey's pair, Belle and Bella, practised a dance for a Pokémon Exhibition. In 'Strategy Begins at Home!', Noelle's protective Bellossom teams up with Brock's Croagunk.

Fun facts

  • In the Spaceworld '97 demo, an early design called Kireihana wore a ring of four flowers and was a Grass and Poison type.
  • Despite the hula look, it is not native to Alola, though a Bellossom appears on the face board in Heahea City's tourist bureau.
  • Bulbapedia calls it the only single-type Pokémon to evolve from a dual-type one.
