Oddish official artwork

Oddish is a Grass/Poison-type Pokémon, the Weed Pokémon, number 43 (#0043) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 1 and comes from the Kanto region. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 5.4 kg.

Oddish spends the day buried in the ground with only its leaves showing, so it can pass for a clump of weeds, until someone pulls it up and it shrieks horribly. At night it wanders off on two root-like feet, sowing seeds as it goes.

How to pronounce Oddish

Oddish is pronounced OD-ish. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Oddish is a round blue bulb with beady red eyes, a tiny mouth and five green leaves sprouting from its head. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 5.4 kg. Bulbapedia says the leaves are prehensile, good for climbing and for grabbing light objects. The Pokédex says it plants itself in nutrient-rich soil and that the richer the earth, the glossier its leaves become.

Behaviour

Oddish is nocturnal. By day it buries its body to avoid the sun and hide from enemies, and the Pokédex thinks its feet may turn into roots while it is planted. Moonlight wakes it and helps it grow, and it then walks nearly 300 m (1,000 feet) a night to scatter its seeds.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is grassland. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by trade or Pokémon HOME transfer, and appears in The Indigo Disk's Coastal Biome and 1-star Tera Raids; Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Ability Chlorophyll doubles its Speed in strong sunlight, and the hidden Ability is Run Away. It puts foes to sleep with Sleep Powder, slows them with Stun Spore, poisons with Poison Powder and recovers with Moonlight. With a base Special Attack of 75 but a Speed of only 30, it hits better with Giga Drain and Moonblast than it moves.

Name origin

Oddish may come from 'oddish' (somewhat odd) or from 'odd' plus 'radish'. The Japanese name is Nazonokusa (ナゾノクサ), possibly a pun on nazo no kusa, 'mystery plant'.

Design inspiration

Atsuko Nishida designed Oddish. It appears to be based on the mandrake, whose roots can look like little people and which legend says screams when pulled up, and its round body also resembles an onion, radish or turnip. These are fan readings, not official statements.

Evolution notes

Oddish evolves into Gloom at level 21.

In the games

In Generation II, Bill's grandfather sends you after a 'round, green' Pokémon with leaves on its head, which is Oddish, even though Oddish is blue; HeartGold and SoulSilver fixed the mistake. Oddish first appeared in Red and Green (Red and Blue outside Japan).

In the anime

Oddish debuted in 'Bulbasaur and the Hidden Village', one of the Pokémon in Melanie's care. In the Journeys series, Goh catches one in 'Dreams Are Made of These!' during a Pokémon Orienteering competition.

Fun facts

  • In the Red and Green beta, its English name was Ladish.
  • The Pokédex gives Oddish a scientific name, Oddium wanderus; Bulbapedia says the only other Pokémon with one is Kabutops.
  • Japanese Pokédex entries in Red and Green, FireRed and Y give it the alias Arukimendesu, which may be a corruption of Archimedes or a nod to a brand of instant noodles.
