Lore
Biology
Baltoy is 0.5 m tall and weighs 21.5 kg. It looks like a tan figurine of clay or mud, with arching red marks over its usually closed eyes, a red stripe round its body, flat arm-like flaps, a spike on top of its head and a smaller spike underneath that serves as its single foot. Claydol's Pokédex entries describe both of them as artificial.
Behaviour
Baltoy moves by spinning on its foot, and a few have been spotted spinning on top of their heads. When it meets others of its kind it gathers with them and cries out loudly together.
Habitat
The Pokédex lists rough terrain, and Bulbapedia says it is usually found in ruins. The Ultra Moon entry says large numbers of them gather in old graveyards, and the Emerald entry mentions murals of it in an ancient, once-bustling city.
Powers
Levitate makes it immune to Ground moves. It uses Rapid Spin, Confusion, Psybeam and Ancient Power, and can use Cosmic Power to harden itself and Self-Destruct or Explosion as a last resort. Its 70 base Special Defense is its best stat, so it is mostly a stepping stone to Claydol.
Name origin
Baltoy may come from 'balancing toy'. The Japanese name is Yajilon (ヤジロン), which may derive from 弥次郎兵衛 (yajirobē), a balancing toy.
Design inspiration
Baltoy looks like a balancing toy, and Bulbapedia notes a resemblance to Hopi kachina figures too. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Evolves into Claydol at level 36.
In the games
Baltoy is found on Route 111 in Ruby and Sapphire, where it debuted. In Pokémon XD: Gale of Darkness it can be snagged as a Shadow Pokémon at the Cipher Lab. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A; its most recent catchable appearances are in the Wild Area of Sword and Shield and in the Sinnoh remakes.
In the anime
Baltoy debuted in 'Me, Myself and Time', where Calista's Baltoy used Rapid Spin to unmask a mysterious woman. In 'Bucking the Treasure Trend!', Buck's Baltoy is his treasure-hunting partner and spins when treasure is near.
