Bergmite official artwork

Bergmite is a Ice-type Pokémon, the Ice Chunk Pokémon, number 712 (#0712) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the Kalos region. It is 1 m tall and weighs 99.5 kg.

Bergmite is a small iceberg on legs that wears armour of ice it makes itself. The Pokédex says it chills the air to minus 100°C (minus 150°F) to do it, and that it can freeze opponents solid.

Lore

Biology

Bergmite is 1.0 m tall and weighs 99.5 kg: a white, round, four-legged body with its upper half encased in pale blue ice, yellow eyes ringed in purple, and ice points on its forehead and rump. Despite its chunky look it can swim. When its ice cracks, the Pokédex says, it uses cold air to make new ice.

Behaviour

Bergmite lives in herds above the snow line. The Pokédex says it sometimes huddles on an Avalugg's back, freezing its feet in place to hitch a ride to a new habitat, and that it brawls with Frigibax whenever the two cross paths.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives on frigid mountains. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the North Paldean Sea, Casseroya Lake and Glaseado Mountain, and in 3-star Tera Raid Battles. In Legends: Z-A it lives in Wild Zone 12 of Bleu District, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds Hyperspace Lumiose.

Powers

Own Tempo prevents confusion, Ice Body heals it a little in hail or snow, and Sturdy is hidden. Icy Wind, Avalanche, Ice Fang and Crunch are its attacks, and Iron Defense and Recover toughen it up. Its Defense of 85 is solid, but Speed 28 is very slow, which suits Avalanche.

Name origin

Bergmite may combine 'iceberg', 'mite' and possibly 'stalagmite'. The Japanese name is Kachikohru (カチコール), possibly from kachikachi ('frozen stiff') and kōru ('to freeze').

Design inspiration

Bergmite seems to be modelled on an iceberg or a stalagmite, and may stand for the visible tip of an iceberg, small beside the mass below the water. Its habit of riding on Avalugg may reference phoresis, where mites hitch rides on larger animals.

Evolution notes

Bergmite evolves into Avalugg at level 37, or into Hisuian Avalugg if it levels up in Hisui.

In the games

Players meet Bergmite in Frost Cavern in X and Y, where it first appeared, and it returned in Sword and Shield and Legends: Arceus.

In the anime

Five Bergmite debuted in 'All Hail the Ice Battlefield!', greeting challengers at Wulfric's Snowbelle Gym. In 'Roy and Fuecoco's First Snow!', a wild one attacked a snow-covered Roy, mistaking him for a Frigibax.
