Avalugg official artwork

Avalugg is a Ice-type Pokémon, the Iceberg Pokémon, number 713 (#0713) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the Kalos region. It is 2 m tall and weighs 505 kg.

Avalugg is the Iceberg Pokémon, a walking glacier of ice as hard as steel that, the Pokédex says, carries a herd of Bergmite on its back like an aircraft carrier.

Lore

Biology

Avalugg is 2.0 m tall and weighs 505 kg. Nearly its whole body is covered in cloudy ice, with a wedge-shaped head, diamond-shaped ice chunks for ears, yellow eyes showing through the ice and a short icicle beard. The Pokédex says its cracks deepen by day and heal overnight.

Behaviour

Avalugg is huge, and the Pokédex says it flattens anything in its way, yet it lets pods of Cetitan pass to avoid conflict, and Bergmite huddle on its back as it crosses the sea. Afloat, it looks exactly like drift ice.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it lives at high latitudes among icebergs. In Scarlet and Violet it is found around the North Paldean Sea and Glaseado Mountain, and in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raid Battles. In Legends: Z-A it lives in Wild Zone 12 of Bleu District, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds Hyperspace Lumiose.

Diet

The Hisuian form's Legends: Z-A entry says it ploughs through snow looking for vegetables people have stored in it.

Powers

Own Tempo, Ice Body and hidden Sturdy are its Abilities. Avalanche, Crunch and Icicle Crash use its 117 Attack, and its Defense of 184 is the highest of any Ice type, though Speed 28 is crawling. Hisuian Avalugg is Ice and Rock, 1.4 m and 262.4 kg, with Strong Jaw instead of Own Tempo and jaw plates the Pokédex says beat steel; its signature move is Mountain Gale.

Name origin

Avalugg may combine 'avalanche' and 'lug' (to haul heavy things). The Japanese name is Crebase (クレベース), possibly from 'crevasse' and 'base'.

Design inspiration

Avalugg seems to be modelled on a flat-topped iceberg or a stalactite, and may stand for the huge submerged part of an iceberg beside Bergmite's tip. Its aircraft-carrier line may allude to Project Habakkuk, a World War II plan for an aircraft carrier made of ice and wood pulp.

Evolution notes

Avalugg evolves from Bergmite at level 37 and is the end of the line.

In the games

In Legends: Arceus, a giant Hisuian Avalugg is a Noble Pokémon, beloved by the people of Hisui and fought as a boss in the Alabaster Icelands. Avalugg debuted in X and Y, by evolving Bergmite.

In the anime

Avalugg debuted in 'All Hail the Ice Battlefield!' as Wulfric's Gym Pokémon, and beat Ash's Hawlucha, Talonflame and Greninja. In the rematch, 'A Real Icebreaker!', it beat Pikachu before losing to Talonflame.
