Lore

Biology

Bronzong is 1.3 m tall and 187 kg, a blue-green bell with a hollow body, a yoke on top and two arms at its sides. It has round red eyes, a rectangular mouth with square teeth and darker markings across its body. Scientists suspect Galar's Bronzong came from elsewhere, judging by the patterns on its body.

Behaviour

A furious Bronzong gives a warning cry that sounds like a tolling bell. Old Pokédex entries say people prayed to it for rain to make crops grow, and Legends: Arceus says some believe its bell-like cry opens a hole to another world.

Habitat

Bulbapedia places Bronzong around ruins and mountain ranges. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in South and North Provinces, around Glaseado Mountain, and on Kitakami's Oni Mountain. It is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Abilities are Levitate and Heatproof, with Heavy Metal hidden. It learns Block on evolving, then weather moves such as Rain Dance, Sunny Day and Weather Ball, and psychic tricks like Hypnosis, Extrasensory and Future Sight. With 116 Defense and Special Defense but only 33 Speed, it is a very slow wall.

Name origin

Bronzong may combine 'bronze' with 'gong', 'dong' (the deep ring of a bell) or bianzhong, an ancient Chinese bell instrument. The Japanese name is Dohtakun (ドータクン), which may come from dōtaku, an ancient bronze bell, plus the honorific -kun.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia reads Bronzong as a dōtaku: ancient Japanese bells thought to have been rung in prayers for a good harvest, then buried in remote places. Its Diamond Pokédex entry may nod to a 1996 dōtaku find at a farm road site, and its face may resemble the Aztec rain god Tlāloc. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Bronzong evolves from Bronzor at level 33.

In the games

Elite Four member Lucian uses a Bronzong in Diamond and Pearl, where the species debuted. In Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time, Darkness and Sky it is one of the statues that come alive to fight you in Aegis Cave. It also appears in Scarlet and Violet, including 5-star Tera Raids.

In the anime

Lucian's Bronzong debuted in 'An Elite Meet and Greet!', where it beat Dawn's newly caught Buizel. In 'Arceus and the Jewel of Life', the Hypnosis of Marcus's Bronzong is central to his plan against Arceus.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Bronzong and Drifblim are joint most common among Elite Four members, with four of them using each.
  • Through Generations IV and V, no Pokémon other than Bronzor and Bronzong had weaknesses that depended on their Ability: Heatproof removes the Fire weakness and Levitate grants Ground immunity.
  • In Generation V, its eyes turn white when it blinks or falls asleep.
