Bronzor official artwork

Bronzor is a Steel/Psychic-type Pokémon, the Bronze Pokémon, number 436 (#0436) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the Sinnoh region. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 60.5 kg.

Bronzor is the Bronze Pokémon, a floating bronze disc that the Pokédex says turns up in ancient tombs, with a sacred pattern on its back. Lore claims polishing it makes its surface reflect the truth, but it hates being polished.

Lore

Biology

Bronzor is 0.5 m tall and 60.5 kg, a flat blue-green disc with two round yellow eyes, six dark blue spheres around its rim and a crest like a sprig on its back. It floats using an unknown energy. One Pokédex entry says scientists believe it once reflected like a mirror, and another says X-ray photos showed nothing inside. A Galar entry says the pattern on its back matches no Galarian culture.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says little about how Bronzor behaves. Ancient people believed the pattern on its back held a mysterious power, and objects shaped like it have turned up in tombs, though no link between them is known.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it typically lives on mountain paths, and the Sword Pokédex places it in ancient ruins. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in South, East and West Provinces and in Kitakami, but it is unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Abilities are Levitate, which makes it immune to Ground moves, and Heatproof, which halves Fire damage; Heavy Metal is hidden. Bulbapedia says before Generation VIII only this line could have Heatproof. Confusion, Confuse Ray, Gyro Ball, Hypnosis and Future Sight suit its mirror theme. Defense and Special Defense are 86, but Speed is 23.

Name origin

Bronzor may combine 'bronze' and 'mirror'. The Japanese name is Dohmirror (ドーミラー), which may come from dōkyō, 'bronze mirror', plus 'mirror'.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia connects Bronzor to the rei-kyō, a Japanese bronze mirror, with the gong as a possible second influence. It also links the line to a ghost story retold by Lafcadio Hearn about a temple bell cast from donated bronze mirrors. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Bronzor evolves into Bronzong at level 33.

In the games

In Diamond and Pearl, where it debuted, Bronzor can be found on Route 206 and in Wayward Cave, Turnback Cave and Mt. Coronet. It also appears in Legends: Arceus, in the Crimson Mirelands, Coronet Highlands and Alabaster Icelands.

In the anime

Saturn's Bronzor debuted in 'Journey to the Unown!', lighting his way through the Solaceon Ruins. Byron's Bronzor lost to Ash's Chimchar in 'Dealing With Defensive Types!' even though it had Heatproof.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia notes that all three Team Galactic Commanders you can battle in the games have a Bronzor.
  • Bulbapedia points out that Bronzor's front sprite looks identical when turned upside-down.
  • Diamond and Pearl's data contains an unused back sprite for Bronzor that is just a copy of its front sprite.
