Lore

Biology

Buzzwole is an anthropomorphic mosquito with a small flat head, red compound eyes and a long silver proboscis that is reputedly tougher than a diamond. Its body bulges with muscles that look like sacs of red fluid, and four pale orange wings fold on its back. Bulbapedia says it absorbs energy through its proboscis, which reacts with its body fluids and swells its muscles. It is 2.4 m (7'10") tall and weighs 333.6 kg (735.5 lbs).

Behaviour

Buzzwole goes around showing off its swollen muscles, and the Pokédex cannot tell whether the show is bragging or menace. Bulbapedia says it strikes a pose each time it acts, perhaps as a way to communicate, though that is not well understood. An Ultra Sun entry says it is apparently a common organism in its own world.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it lives in the Ultra Jungle. In Sun two can be found at Melemele Meadow, and in Ultra Sun it lives in the Ultra Jungle. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Ability Beast Boost raises its highest stat by a stage whenever it knocks out another Pokémon. It fights with Power-Up Punch, Superpower, Hammer Arm and Dynamic Punch, and stings with Fell Stinger. Its base Attack and Defense are both 139 and its HP is 107, which makes it very tough.

Name origin

Buzzwole may combine buzz or bustle with swole, a slang word for muscular. The Japanese name is Massivoon (マッシブーン), which may blend 'massive' with a Japanese word for mosquito and the buzzing sound boon.

Design inspiration

James Turner designed Buzzwole, according to a tweet cited by Bulbapedia. It is based on a mosquito with a bodybuilder's build, possibly the Asian tiger mosquito, and the black shading on its muscles resembles comic-book art. These are fan readings, not official statements.

In the games

Buzzwole is a Sun-exclusive Ultra Beast, first met in Sun and Moon. In Sword and Shield it is a Max Lair Pokémon once the 'They Came From The Ultra Beyond!' adventure is unlocked, and it is playable in Pokémon UNITE as a melee all-rounder.

In the anime

Debuted in 'A Mission of Ultra Urgency!', coming out of an Ultra Wormhole onto Melemele Meadow, and became the first Ultra Beast the Ultra Guardians had to catch. Ash caught it with a Beast Ball before it was sent home.
