Pheromosa is the Lissome Pokémon, a slender white Ultra Beast shaped like a cockroach. The Pokédex says it has been spotted racing across the countryside at terrific speed, and Wicke of the Aether Foundation puts it at over 200 km/h (120 mph) in an instant.

Lore

Biology

Pheromosa is a thin, mostly white Ultra Beast built from five drooping discs, with gold joints, long thin limbs and a yellow crown-like structure on its small head. Long white antennae rise from the crown, and two clear wing-like structures hang from the back of its head almost to the ground. It is 1.8 m (5'11") tall and weighs 25.0 kg (55.1 lbs).

Behaviour

The Pokédex says it will not touch anything, possibly because it senses uncleanness in our world. Bulbapedia adds that most creatures facing it become confused, as if struck by its beauty, and lose the will to fight, and that it may have an organ that makes a pheromone unknown to science.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it lives in the Ultra Desert. In Moon four can be found in Verdant Cavern, and in Ultra Moon it lives in the Ultra Desert. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Ability Beast Boost raises its highest stat by a stage whenever it knocks out another Pokémon. It kicks with High Jump Kick, Close Combat and Triple Kick, buzzes with Bug Buzz and powers up with Quiver Dance. With 151 base Speed, 137 Attack and 137 Special Attack it hits hard and first, but its Defense and Special Defense are only 37.

Name origin

Pheromosa may combine pheromone with hermosa or formosa, words for beautiful or shapely in Spanish, Italian and Portuguese. The Japanese name is Pheroache (フェローチェ), which may blend pheromone, the Italian feroce and cockroach.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says it may draw on an American cockroach just after moulting, when it turns white, and perhaps a copepod. Its pose and slim body also resemble a fashion model or a stick insect, and its design and personality seem to contrast with how people see cockroaches. These are fan readings, not official statements.

In the games

Pheromosa is a Moon-exclusive Ultra Beast, first met in Sun and Moon. In Sword and Shield it is a Max Lair Pokémon once the 'They Came From The Ultra Beyond!' adventure is unlocked.

In the anime

Debuted in 'Beauty is Only Crystal Deep!', where it arrived through an Ultra Wormhole and began stealing Z-Crystals from Trainers. Bewear defeated it, which let the Ultra Guardians catch it and send it home.

Fun facts

  • A real cockroach, Nocticola pheromosa, was named after it: Foo Maosheng and Cristian C. Lucañas described the Singapore species in 2023, saying it shares Pheromosa's long antennae, hood-like wings and slender legs.
  • In Sun and Moon its catch rate is 255, and Bulbapedia works out that the Beast Ball's five times bonus means a Beast Ball can never fail to catch it.
  • In Pokémon Adventures Guzma uses it among the Ultra Beasts that attack Po Town.
