Lore
Biology
Capsakid is a short, green, armless biped, 0.3 m tall and 3 kg, with a four-leaved dark green collar and a white cap split into six sections at the rim. Its beak-like mouth holds one tooth at the front of the upper jaw. That tooth falls out naturally, and the Pokédex says it ends up in traditional Paldean dishes that can be extremely spicy.
Behaviour
Bulbapedia calls Capsakid notorious for violent mood swings, possibly caused by the spicy chemicals inside it, and the Pokédex says it bites anything it dislikes.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in Asado Desert and Paldea's South and West Provinces, and Serebii lists desert and mountain biomes.
Powers
Its Abilities are Chlorophyll, which doubles its Speed in strong sunlight, and Insomnia, with Klutz hidden. It learns Leafage, Razor Leaf, Bite, Sunny Day, Crunch and Solar Beam. With 62 base Attack and 62 Special Attack it is a balanced attacker, still waiting for its evolution.
Name origin
Capsakid combines 'capsaicin' (the chemical that makes chillies hot) or Capsicum (the pepper genus) with 'kappa' and 'kid'. The Japanese name is Capsaiji (カプサイジ), which may blend capsaicin, kappa and 児 ji ('child').
Design inspiration
Capsakid appears to be an unripe chilli pepper such as a habanero, and its cap mimics the flower that covers a growing pepper. The cap and beak may also recall a kappa, and the white cap an eggshell on a newly hatched chick. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Capsakid evolves with a Fire Stone, and Bulbapedia says it is the only Grass Pokémon that does so.
In the games
Capsakid is a wild Pokémon and a 2-star Tera Raid Pokémon in Scarlet and Violet, where it debuted. In Legends: Z-A it appears in the Mega Dimension DLC, in the Grass-type 2-star and 3-star and Fire-type 3-star wild zones of Hyperspace Lumiose.
In the anime
Capsakid debuted in Pokémon Horizons in 'Wattrel's High Wind Warning!', where Roy rescues one from falling off a cliff. Pepper owns one in 'The Knight in the Ruins'.
Fun facts
- Bulbapedia says the cap may resemble a sunbonnet, and there is a real chilli called the Scotch bonnet.
- Bulbapedia suggests the line's Paldean setting may allude to Spain being the first European country to bring home the chilli pepper.
- In the POKÉTOON 'The Legend of Capsakid', Akira's Capsakid agitates several Pokémon with its spicy bite.
