Carnivine is a Grass-type Pokémon, the Bug Catcher Pokémon, number 455 (#0455) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 4 and comes from the Sinnoh region. It is 1.4 m tall and weighs 27 kg.

Carnivine is the Bug Catcher Pokémon, a Venus flytrap that hangs from trees by its vines with its mouth wide open and lures insects in with sweet-smelling drool. Even after the catch, a single meal takes it a whole day.

Lore

Biology

Carnivine is a green, flytrap-like Pokémon, 1.4 m tall and 27 kg, with round eyes, spiky teeth and a yellow, green-spotted stem. Red and green vines trail beneath it like tentacles, and two leaf arms end in three leafy fingers each. Bulbapedia says its jaws can swing open through roughly 180 degrees.

Behaviour

Carnivine is gluttonous and unruly, even though it is a plant. The Pokédex says it lashes itself to trees in marshes, or dangles from branches with its mouth open, looking just like a plant. It can also walk about on its tentacles to find a good branch.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it lives in forests and marshes. Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl have it in the Great Marsh and Legends: Arceus in Hisui, but it is unobtainable in Sword and Shield, Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.

Diet

Mostly insects and other small bugs, according to Bulbapedia; the Pokédex says a meal takes a whole day to eat.

Powers

Its only Ability is Levitate, so Ground moves cannot touch it. It binds foes with Bind and Vine Whip, lures them with Sweet Scent, and finishes with Leaf Tornado, Crunch and Power Whip. Base Attack 100 and Special Attack 90 are strong, but Speed 46 is slow.

Name origin

Carnivine may combine 'carnivore' and 'vine'. The Japanese name Muskippa (マスキッパ) may combine Dionaea muscipula, the Venus flytrap's scientific name, with sukippara ('empty stomach') or sukippa ('gap between the teeth').

Design inspiration

Carnivine is based on the Venus flytrap, according to Bulbapedia.

In the games

Players find Carnivine in the Great Marsh in Diamond and Pearl, where it debuted. Bulbapedia lists no notable Trainers or story roles for it in the main series.

In the anime

James's Carnivine debuted in 'Two Degrees of Separation!', fetched from one of his old Sinnoh mansions. He later left it at Team Rocket HQ before going to Unova, so it would not stand out as a non-native Pokémon, and it returned in 'Rocket Revengers!'.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Carnivine stands alone among Levitate users in already resisting Ground moves.
  • In Pokémon GO it is region-exclusive, found mainly in the south-eastern United States and the northern Bahamas.
  • In Pokémon Battle Revolution, Toxic usually shows two spinning purple orbs, but when Carnivine uses it they travel erratically, the same as for Spinda.
  • Bulbapedia notes it shares its name, probably by coincidence, with a Dragon Quest monster.
