Lore
Biology
Finneon is a small, ellipsoid fish, 0.4 m long and 7 kg, with a black upper body, a light blue underside and a pink stripe along each side. Two black dorsal fins, small blue pectoral fins and pink eyes complete it, but the tail steals the show: a pair of blue fins like butterfly wings, spotted with pink. Females have larger lower tail lobes than males.
Behaviour
Finneon swims near the surface by day, soaking up sunlight, and moves deeper at night. The Pokédex says its energetic jumps can carry it out of the sea, where Wingull swoop on it, and that resorts feed it to keep it close because divers love it. Its glow appears to work as camouflage, according to the Sun entry.
Habitat
Bulbapedia says it lives in water and travels in schools, sometimes with Lumineon. In Scarlet and Violet it is in the West Paldean Sea, and in The Indigo Disk it is in the Terarium's Coastal and Polar Biomes. It is unobtainable in Sword and Shield and Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Its Abilities are Swift Swim and Storm Drain, with Water Veil hidden. It fires Water Gun and Water Pulse, rides rain with Rain Dance and heals with Aqua Ring. U-turn and Tailwind show off its speed, with Bounce for jumps. Its base stats are modest, with Speed 66 highest.
Name origin
Finneon may combine 'fin' and 'neon'. The Japanese name Keikouo (ケイコウオ) may combine keikō ('fluorescence') and uo ('fish').
Design inspiration
Its big tail fins are similar to those of the freshwater butterflyfish and to real butterfly wings, and it also resembles a neon or cardinal tetra. Its leaps from the water, and the way birds snatch it in mid-air, echo flying fish. These are fan readings, not official statements.
Evolution notes
It evolves into Lumineon at level 31.
In the games
Finneon first appeared in Diamond and Pearl, where it can be fished up with a Good Rod around Sinnoh routes such as Route 218. It returns in Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and swims the Cobalt Coastlands of Hisui in Legends: Arceus.
In the anime
Zoey's Finneon made its series debut in 'Staging a Heroes' Welcome!' on the Wallace Cup's Performance Stage. Lana catches a wild one by fishing in 'Yo, Ho, Ho! Go, Popplio!' and feeds it.
