Lore

Biology

Cascoon is a round pupa wrapped in soft purple silk with two holes showing red eyes. It is 0.7 m tall and weighs 11.5 kg. The silk hardens into a tough cocoon, and the Pokédex says cracks appear in it when evolution is near. Inside, its cells produce the energy for evolution, which makes it hot.

Behaviour

If attacked, Cascoon does not move, however badly it is hurt, because the Pokédex says moving would leave its body weak after evolution. It remembers who hurt it and seeks payback once it evolves. Bulbapedia says it hides under large leaves and in gaps in branches, camouflaging itself with dead leaves.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is Forest. In Ruby and Sapphire it is found in Petalburg Woods.

Powers

In most games Cascoon's only move is Harden, and its Ability Shed Skin sometimes cures a status condition. It is a waiting stage with 55 base Defense.

Name origin

Cascoon may combine 'cask', 'cast', the Spanish cáscara ('shell') and 'cocoon'. The Japanese name is Mayuld (マユルド), possibly from mayu ('cocoon') and 'shield'.

Design inspiration

Cascoon looks modelled on the cocoon of a moth.

Evolution notes

Cascoon evolves into Dustox at level 10. Its Defense rises from 55 to 70 when it does, unlike Metapod, Kakuna, Silcoon and Spewpa, whose Defense falls when they evolve.

In the games

In Legends: Arceus Cascoon appears in the Obsidian Fieldlands, including mass outbreaks. It debuted in Ruby and Sapphire, and Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Cascoon debuted when Jessie's Wurmple evolved into one in 'A Corphish out of Water', though Jessie thought it was a Silcoon. Goh's three Wurmple become Cascoon in 'Best Friend...Worst Nightmare!'.
