Lore

Biology

Celesteela is 9.2 m tall and weighs 999.9 kg, tied with Cosmoem as the heaviest Pokémon according to Bulbapedia. It has a small white head under a hat-like crown of long hair, huge bamboo-like arms and a layered body like a dress, ending in black bamboo stalks tipped with blue rings that double as rocket boosters. Bulbapedia says it stores a flammable gas that it shoots from its arms and underside.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says witnesses saw it fly across the sky at high speed, and another entry says it burned down a forest by venting gas from its two arms. The Ultra Sun entry lists it among the dangerous Ultra Beasts, with high energy readings coming from both arms.

Habitat

It comes from the Ultra Crater, where Bulbapedia says it sprouts from the soil like a plant before blasting off into space. It is not available in Scarlet, Violet or Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Ability is Beast Boost, which raises its best stat when it knocks out a Pokémon. Being part Steel and part Flying, it learns Air Slash, Flash Cannon, Heavy Slam and Skull Bash, and can use Flamethrower and Fire Blast by TM. With base HP 97, Defense 103, Special Defense 101 and Special Attack 107 but only 61 Speed, it is a slow, sturdy attacker.

Name origin

Celesteela may combine 'celestial', 'steel' and 'stella' (Latin and Italian for star). The Japanese name is Tekkaguya (テッカグヤ), which may mix tetsu (iron), tekka (gunfire) and the name of Princess Kaguya.

Design inspiration

Celesteela may draw on Princess Kaguya of The Tale of the Bamboo Cutter, who is discovered as an infant in a bamboo stalk and turns out to come from the Moon. Its long hair and layered dress echo her, and it is exclusive to Moon and Ultra Moon. These are fan readings.

In the games

Celesteela is a Moon exclusive found at Haina Desert or Malie Garden in Sun and Moon, its first games. Ultra Moon sends you to the Ultra Crater instead, and Sword and Shield's Crown Tundra later added it to the Max Lair.

In the anime

Celesteela debuted in 'Rise and Shine, Starship!', where Sophocles found it buried at Bamboo Hill and took it for 'The Celestial Starship', a figure from a folktale. It had been growing in Alola for over 200 years, and the Ultra Guardians could not catch it before it flew back into space.
