Lore
Biology
Charjabug is a boxy, three-segment bug, 0.5 m tall and 10.5 kg. Its eyes sit behind blue screens that only show when they glow, and its jaws form a lightning-bolt shape when open. A sturdy shell protects it while it eats, and an electric sac holds the power that digesting leaves produces.
Behaviour
Charjabug spends its time half-buried in fallen leaves, barely moving while it munches. It saves its electricity for persistent opponents, zapping them from the tips of its jaws. The Pokédex says it eats large amounts of fresh and decaying leaf litter in order to evolve.
Habitat
It lives in leaf litter on the ground. In Alola it is found on Blush Mountain, and in Scarlet and Violet it roams Kitakami through The Teal Mask. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
Diet
Fresh and decaying leaves, plus the humus of the forest floor.
Powers
Its Ability is Battery, which boosts the power of its allies' moves. Charge is its starting move, and it later learns Spark, Discharge and Iron Defense. With 95 base Defense but only 36 Speed, it is a slow, sturdy support Pokémon.
Name origin
Charjabug may combine 'charge' or 'charger' with 'bug'. The Japanese name is Dendimushi (デンヂムシ), which may combine denchi ('battery') and jimushi ('grub').
Design inspiration
Charjabug may draw on a cocooned insect and a battery. Bulbapedia also suggests the denkimushi, a Japanese caterpillar whose sting reportedly feels like a jolt. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Charjabug evolves into Vikavolt with a Thunder Stone, which works from Generation VIII onwards. Before that, it needed to be levelled up inside a special magnetic field.
In the games
Charjabug's big moment comes in Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon, where nine Charjabug nicknamed Onejabug through Ninejabug live at Hokulani Observatory and the player arranges them to power Sophocles's trial. The species first appeared in Sun and Moon. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in 3-star Tera Raid Battles.
In the anime
Sophocles's Charjabug debuted in 'So Long, Sophocles!', after Ash trapped it in a cage as a farewell present. Horacio's Shiny Charjabug lost the Charjabug race in 'Mounting an Electrifying Charge!'.
