Chesnaught is a Grass/Fighting-type Pokémon, the Spiny Armor Pokémon, number 652 (#0652) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the Kalos region. It is 1.6 m tall and weighs 90 kg.

Chesnaught is the Spiny Armor Pokémon, a gentle knight-like Grass and Fighting type whose tackle can flip a 50-ton tank, according to the Pokédex. It defends its friends with its own body, and in Legends: Z-A it gained a Mega form.

Lore

Biology

Chesnaught is a hulking armoured hedgehog, 1.6 m tall and 90 kg, with soft white fur across its belly and framing its face like a beard. A beige helmet-like plate covers its head, and a big domed chestnut shell with four spines forms its armour. It can bring its arms together into a spiked shield.

Behaviour

Chesnaught is gentle and prefers to avoid conflict, but when pushed it will pummel opponents with its spiked fists. The Pokédex says it protects allies in danger by making a shield of its arms and blocking attacks with its own body, and claims that with its fists raised in front of its face it could survive a bomb blast.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives it no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by trade or a Poké Portal News event; in Legends: Z-A you evolve a Quilladin, and in the Mega Dimension DLC it also turns up in Hyperspace Lumiose's Grass-type and Fighting-type wild zones.

Powers

Its Ability Overgrow boosts Grass moves at low HP, and its Hidden Ability Bulletproof blocks ball and bomb moves. It learns Spiky Shield on evolving, and later gets Hammer Arm and Wood Hammer. With Chesnaughtite it can Mega Evolve into Mega Chesnaught, new in Legends: Z-A, which is still Grass and Fighting but trades Speed for much more Attack and Defense. Bulbapedia says its fur works as an impact-absorbing cloak and its shoulder armour turns into an axe. Base Defense 122 makes Chesnaught a slow, sturdy bruiser.

Name origin

Chesnaught may combine 'chestnut' with 'juggernaut', 'knight' or 'dreadnought'. The Japanese name is Brigarron (ブリガロン), which may blend 'brigandine' (a body armour) with marron, the French for chestnut.

Design inspiration

Bulbapedia says the Kalos starters' final forms were designed to look like creatures from a European-style role-playing game. Chesnaught seems to be a hedgehog crossed with a ripe chestnut, with a three-banded armadillo's pale armour and a knight's body armour. Mega Chesnaught may take its crown and red cape from kings. These are fan readings except where a developer is quoted.

Evolution notes

Chesnaught evolves from Quilladin at level 36 and is the final form of the Chespin line.

In the games

Chesnaught is the final form of the Kalos Grass starter in X and Y. In Ultra Sun and Ultra Moon it was available from Exeggutor Island with the QR Scanner.

In the anime

Millis Steel's Chesnaught is her main Pokémon in the film Diancie and the Cocoon of Destruction. In 'Curtain Up! Fight the Fights!', Alain's Chesnaught lost its Masters Eight Tournament battle against Leon's Rillaboom.

Fun facts

  • It has the highest Defense of any fully evolved first partner Pokémon, not counting Mega forms, according to Bulbapedia.
  • Mega Chesnaught's Defense 172 and Speed 44 are, Bulbapedia says, both the highest and the lowest base stats among fully evolved first partner Pokémon.
  • In 'Dream a Little Dream from Me!' Clemont's Chespin evolves straight into a Chesnaught, but only in a dream.
