Clauncher official artwork

Clauncher is a Water-type Pokémon, the Water Gun Pokémon, number 692 (#0692) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 6 and comes from the Kalos region. It is 0.5 m tall and weighs 8.3 kg.

Clauncher is the Water Gun Pokémon, a small shrimp that fires water from its giant right claw like a pistol. Its poor sense of balance means it mostly travels by jetting water from that claw, which makes swimming in a straight line hard.

How to pronounce Clauncher

Clauncher is pronounced KLAWN-cher. The capital letters show the stressed syllable.

Lore

Biology

Clauncher is a blue Pokémon, 0.5 m tall and 8.3 kg, dominated by one oversized right claw. Controlled explosions of gas inside the claw expel compressed water, and the Pokédex says the blast can knock flying prey out of the air and shatter rock at close range.

Behaviour

Clauncher's claws sometimes fall off in battle, and it hides away quietly until they have regrown. The Pokédex says its poor balance makes it terrible at swimming straight, so it moves around by firing water out of its right pincer.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Violet it swims in all four Paldean seas and appears in 2-star Tera Raid Battles, while Scarlet players must trade for it. In Legends: Z-A it is found in Wild Zone 11, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds Hyperspace Lumiose.

Powers

Its only Ability is Mega Launcher, which strengthens aura and pulse moves to 1.5× power. It fires Water Gun, Aqua Jet and Water Pulse and learns Aura Sphere at level 40, plus Crabhammer and Muddy Water. Bulbapedia calls it an adept pulse-move user. With base HP 50 and Defense 62 it is small and unremarkable until it evolves.

Name origin

Clauncher may combine claw and launcher. The Japanese name is Udeppou (ウデッポウ), possibly from mizudeppou (water gun) and ude (arm).

Design inspiration

Clauncher looks like a pistol shrimp, which snaps a claw to fire a jet of water. Its blue colour may come from the crayfish Procambarus alleni, or possibly from mutated American lobsters. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Clauncher evolves into Clawitzer at level 37.

In the games

In X, its first game, Clauncher can be fished up with a Good Rod around Ambrette Town and Cyllage City. It later reached the Isle of Armor in Sword's Expansion Pass, Violet, and Legends: Z-A with its Mega Dimension DLC.

In the anime

Rodman's Clauncher debuted in 'Going for the Gold!'. It was caught to entertain guests at Ambrette Aquarium but turned lazy and unfriendly, until it helped save Clemont's Dedenne from Team Rocket.

Fun facts

  • The meat inside its claws is a delicacy in Galar and Paldea, though one Pokédex entry admits the distinct flavour does not suit everyone.
  • Dreepy are known to bite on Clauncher without feeding on it, which Bulbapedia says is a habit carried over from when the Dreepy were alive.
  • Mega Launcher was an Ability that only Clauncher and Clawitzer were known to carry in Generation VIII.
