Lore

Biology

Clobbopus is a small beige octopus, 0.6 m tall and 4 kg, with an orange mask-like pattern on its face and six orange spots on its head. Six small tentacles carry it around, while two large ones act as arms and end in rounded indigo bumps that look like boxing gloves. According to the Legends: Z-A Pokédex, those bulbs are perfect for pummelling but next to useless for gripping.

Behaviour

Clobbopus is very curious, and the Pokédex says it explores by punching whatever catches its interest. Its intelligence is said to match a three-year-old's. It is calm about losing a tentacle, because it knows the tentacle will grow back.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it normally lives underwater, and the Pokédex says the search for food brings it onto land. In Sword and Shield it is found on Route 9 and in Max Raid Battles at North Lake Miloch and Dusty Bowl, and in Legends: Z-A it arrives with the Mega Dimension DLC, in Hyperspace Lumiose's 1-star and 4-star Fighting wild zones.

Powers

Its Abilities are Limber and Technician (hidden). It learns punching and grappling moves such as Rock Smash, Brick Break, Submission, Reversal and Superpower, plus Bulk Up and Taunt. With 68 base Attack but only 32 Speed and 310 stats in total, it is slow and weak, and its real job is to grow into Grapploct.

Name origin

Clobbopus may blend 'clobber' and 'octopus'. The Japanese name is Tatakko (タタッコ), possibly from tataku ('to strike'), tako ('octopus') and a word for a spoiled child, dadakko, which is the Japanese name of its category.

Design inspiration

Clobbopus appears to be an octopus given a boxer's gloves, and the orange patterns on its head look like wrestling masks. Its Fighting type may also be a visual pun on takonaguri, an expression meaning 'hitting endlessly' that literally reads 'octopus beating'. These are fan readings, and no designer is credited.

Evolution notes

Clobbopus evolves into Grapploct when it levels up while knowing Taunt, which it learns at level 35 in Sword and Shield.

In the games

Players meet Clobbopus as a wild Pokémon in Sword and Shield, where it debuted, and it is not in Scarlet and Violet. Its only place in Legends: Z-A is the Mega Dimension DLC.

In the anime

Clobbopus debuted in 'Curtain Up! Fight the Fights!' as a Trainer's Pokémon, and it reappeared in 'Whittle While You Work!'.

Fun facts

  • It is the lightest Fighting-type Pokémon, according to both Bulbapedia and the game data.
  • Clobbopus and Grapploct are the sole Pokémon to belong to the Human-Like and Water 1 Egg Groups together.
  • In the Pokémon Adventures manga, several Clobbopus make their debut at once, in 'Swaying!! Murky Memories'.
