Coalossal is a Rock/Fire-type Pokémon, the Coal Pokémon, number 839 (#0839) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the Galar region. It is 2.8 m tall and weighs 310.5 kg.

Coalossal is a coal giant whose Gigantamax form once served as a giant heating stove in a Galar cold wave and saved many lives. Even its ordinary form burns at over 1,500 degrees Celsius (2,700 degrees Fahrenheit), which the Pokédex says is hot enough to turn foes to ash.

Lore

Biology

Coalossal is 2.8 m tall and weighs 310.5 kg. It is a hulking, coal-black creature on two legs with stubby arms, a mountain of burning coal on its back, pale eyes that can flare red and a jagged-toothed mouth. Two spikes sit on its shoulders, the left much longer. In battle the Pokédex says its mountain of coal burns bright red and sends sparks flying, scorching everything nearby. Gigantamax Coalossal grows far larger, its shoulder spikes split in two, and its front opens in three places like a stove, with fire the Pokédex says is hotter than 2,000 degrees Celsius (3,600 degrees Fahrenheit).

Behaviour

Coalossal is usually peaceful and gentle, according to the Pokédex, and it only turns fearsome when someone vandalises its mine. To intimidate opponents it shakes its body hard and scatters coal from its smouldering back.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says Coalossal lives in coal mines. In Sword and Shield it is found at Dusty Bowl and Lake of Outrage, and in the Crown Tundra at Ballimere Lake and Lakeside Cave.

Powers

Coalossal has Steam Engine or Flame Body, with Flash Fire hidden. It is the only known Pokémon that can learn Tar Shot, and Gigantamax Coalossal is the only one that can use G-Max Volcalith. It strikes with Heat Crash, Rock Blast and Stone Edge. With 110 base HP and 120 base Defense it is a huge, durable wall, held back by a base Speed of 30.

Name origin

Coalossal may combine 'coal' and 'colossal'. The Japanese name is Sekitanzan (セキタンザン), which may join sekitan ('coal') and tanzan ('mountain coal mine').

Design inspiration

Coalossal appears to mix a dinosaur or kaiju with a pile of coal, perhaps echoing the popular mix-up that fossil fuels are made from dinosaurs. Its Gigantamax form may take after a firebox or furnace, and its Japanese name suggests a living coal mine. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Coalossal evolves from Carkol at level 34 and is the final stage.

In the games

Coalossal is the final Pokémon of Gordie, the Rock-type Gym Leader of Circhester, who Gigantamaxes it in his Gym battle in Sword and Shield, where it debuted. In Shield his mother Melony runs the Gym instead. In Scarlet and Violet it appears in 5-star Tera Raid Battles and can be had by evolving Carkol, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Coalossal debuted in 'Sword and Shield: The Darkest Day!', where Dynamax energy makes it Gigantamax and rampage until Ash and Leon defeat it. In Pokémon: Twilight Wings, Gordie's Gigantamax Coalossal battles Melony's Gigantamax Lapras.
