Rolycoly is a Rock-type Pokémon, the Coal Pokémon, number 837 (#0837) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 8 and comes from the Galar region. It is 0.3 m tall and weighs 12 kg.

Rolycoly is the Coal Pokémon, a living lump of coal that races about on a single wheel-like leg. The Pokédex says it was first found roughly four centuries ago, down in coal mines, and flakes of its body were once burned as fuel.

Lore

Biology

Rolycoly is 0.3 m tall and weighs 12 kg. It looks like a small piece of coal, with one orange-red eye that Bulbapedia says can light up dark places, and a wheel-like leg that carries it over rough, rocky ground like a unicycle. The Pokédex says most of its body is made of the same stuff as coal, and that chunks that flake off as its surface ages were long used as an alternative fuel.

Behaviour

On sunny days Rolycoly rolls out onto grassy plains, and the Pokédex says it eats the grass that snarls around its wheel. Bulbapedia says Dwebble is its natural enemy, since Dwebble tends to mistake it for a rock to turn into a home.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says it roams grassy plains and the rocky ground of mines and caves. Serebii lists mine and cave biomes in Paldea, and in Sword and Shield it is found at Galar Mine, Giant's Cap and Motostoke Riverbank.

Powers

Rolycoly has Steam Engine or Heatproof, with Flash Fire hidden. It uses Smokescreen and Rock Polish to move fast, hits with Smack Down and Ancient Power, and burns with Incinerate and Heat Crash. With only 30 base HP and 30 base Speed it is a very weak first stage.

Name origin

Rolycoly may combine 'roly-poly' and 'coal', and could pun on 'rolling coal'. The Japanese name is Tandon (タンドン), which may join tan ('coal') and don, a bang sound.

Design inspiration

Rolycoly may draw on a lump of coal and a wheel. Bulbapedia suggests its grey Shiny colouring recalls how burning coal turns white with ash. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Rolycoly evolves into Carkol at level 18.

Rolycoly turns up in East Province Area Three and in 2-star Tera Raid Battles in Scarlet and Violet, having first appeared in Sword and Shield. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
