Lore
Biology
Crocalor is a stout, melon-shaped crocodile, mostly red, with a white face and chest that look like a mask. Yellow rectangular scales cover its back and tail, and its chest has black and yellow stripes. Bulbapedia says it can control the fireball in its flaming nest, sending it out to use in its moves. It is 1.0 m tall and weighs 30.7 kg.
Behaviour
The Pokédex says a valve in Crocalor's flame sac is joined to its vocal cords, so each blast of fire comes with a guttural cry. Bulbapedia adds that its voice is hardly beautiful and grows more destructive as its flames get stronger.
Habitat
The Pokédex names no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it does not appear in the wild and is obtained only by evolving Fuecoco.
Powers
Crocalor uses Ember, Flamethrower and Fire Blast, backed by Hyper Voice and Round, and can inflict burns with Will-O-Wisp. Its Ability is Blaze, with Unaware hidden. Base Special Attack 90 is its best stat, which makes it a special attacker in the middle of its line.
Name origin
Crocalor may combine 'crocodile' and calor, Spanish and Portuguese for 'heat', and may also nod to coloratura, a showy style of singing. The Japanese name is Achigator (アチゲータ), possibly achichi ('hot!'), 'mariachi' and 'alligator'.
Design inspiration
Crocalor looks like a crocodile wearing a calavera pattern, the decorated skull faces of Mexico's Day of the Dead, which may also suggest a mariachi musician and fit its association with singing. The flaming nest may reference crocodiles that balance sticks on their heads to attract birds looking for nest material, and it also looks like a sombrero or an Easter mona cake topped with an egg. These are fan readings, not official statements.
Evolution notes
Fuecoco evolves into Crocalor at level 16, and Crocalor into Skeledirge at level 36.
In the games
Crocalor is the middle stage of the Fire partner line, and in Scarlet and Violet, where it first appeared, you get one by evolving Fuecoco. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Roy's Crocalor debuted in 'Shine on, Terastallization! Liko vs. Roy!', when his Fuecoco evolved part-way through their match in the Tera Training Student Battle Tournament. It evolved into Skeledirge in 'Don't Give Up, Crocalor!'.
