Fuecoco is a Fire-type Pokémon, the Fire Croc Pokémon, number 909 (#0909) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 9.8 kg.

Fuecoco is the Fire Croc Pokémon, a laid-back crocodile whose flame sac is so small that fire energy is always leaking out of it. Along with Sprigatito and Quaxly, it was among the first Generation IX Pokémon ever shown to the public.

Lore

Biology

Fuecoco is a bipedal crocodile with a red body, a white belly and a white face. The leaking fire energy escapes from the dent on its head as a pair of bright yellow flame tufts, and more tufts can appear when it gets excited. The Pokédex says it lies on warm rocks and turns the heat soaked up by its square scales into fire energy. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 9.8 kg.

Behaviour

Fuecoco is easy-going and does things at its own pace, but it loves eating and makes a dash for any food it spots. Pokémon Sleep shows it moving its mouth as if chewing while it dozes.

Habitat

The Pokédex names no habitat, and Fuecoco is not found in the wild in Scarlet and Violet.

Powers

Fuecoco attacks with Ember, Incinerate and Flamethrower, and can sing out Round and Hyper Voice. Its Ability is Blaze, which strengthens Fire moves when it is low on HP, with Unaware hidden, which makes it ignore an opponent's stat changes. It is slow, with base Speed 36, and HP 67 is its best stat.

Name origin

Fuecoco may combine fuego, Spanish for 'fire', with cocodrilo ('crocodile'), or come from fuocoso, an Italian musical term for 'fiery'. The Japanese name is Hogator (ホゲータ), possibly 'fire', hogē (a dumbfounded sound) and 'gator'.

Design inspiration

Fuecoco appears to be a baby crocodile, with touches of theropod dinosaurs and crocodile-shaped toys. Its fire may nod to the way crocodiles shed extra heat through their open mouths, and its flame tufts, colouring and shape also resemble a chilli pepper. These are fan readings, not official statements.

Evolution notes

Fuecoco evolves into Crocalor at level 16, and Crocalor into Skeledirge at level 36.

In the games

Fuecoco is the Fire choice among the trio of first partners that Clavell offers in Cabo Poco, alongside Sprigatito and Quaxly, in Scarlet and Violet, where it first appeared. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

In Pokémon Horizons, Roy's Fuecoco first appeared as a wild Pokémon aboard the Brave Olivine in 'The Pendant That Starts It All (Part Two)'. Roy caught it in 'The Ancient Poké Ball', and it Terastallized into a Fire type in 'Sparkle! The Glow of Flame and Art', in Roy's Tera Training bout with Brassius.

Fun facts

  • Pokémon Sleep shows Fuecoco and its evolutions sleeping with one eye open, which Bulbapedia compares to real crocodiles.
  • Its base Special Defense of 40 ties it with Slugma, Litten, Salandit, Scorbunny and Charcadet as the lowest of any Fire type.
  • In Scarlet and Violet, Bulbapedia notes, if you pick Fuecoco then no non-player Trainer will Terastallize a Pokémon into the Fire type until Crispin turns up in The Indigo Disk.
