Meowscarada official artwork

Meowscarada is a Grass/Dark-type Pokémon, the Magician Pokémon, number 908 (#0908) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 31.2 kg.

Meowscarada is the Magician Pokémon, a Grass and Dark type that wins through misdirection. The Pokédex says the reflective fur lining its cape hides the stem of its flower, so the bloom seems to float in mid-air.

Lore

Biology

Meowscarada is a humanoid lynx with light green fur that stops above its long, dark green legs, plus a short, fluffy tail. A four-pointed mask on its face makes its drooping ears seem like perked-up cat ears, and a collar like flower petals fastens a cape that grows from the leaves Floragato wore at its neck. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 31.2 kg.

Behaviour

Meowscarada is a trickster who relies on misdirection: the Pokédex says it booby-traps foes with flower bombs packed with pollen and sets them off before they realise what is going on. Bulbapedia, citing the official site, calls it proud and showy, but also sensitive and prone to jealousy.

Habitat

The Pokédex names no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it does not appear in the wild and is obtained only by evolving Floragato.

Powers

Its signature move is Flower Trick, a thrown bouquet that never misses and always lands a critical hit; Bulbapedia says no other known Pokémon can learn it. It also knows Knock Off, Night Slash, U-turn and Leaf Storm. Its Ability is Overgrow, with Protean hidden, which changes its type to match each move it uses. With base Speed 123 and Attack 110 it is a fast physical attacker.

Name origin

Meowscarada may combine 'meow' with mascarada, Spanish and Portuguese for 'masquerade'. The Japanese name is Masquernya (マスカーニャ), possibly 'masquerade' plus nyā, the Japanese sound of a meow.

Design inspiration

Meowscarada appears to be a lynx, quite possibly the Iberian lynx since Paldea is based on the Iberian Peninsula, blended with a stage illusionist. Its mask and diamond patterns recall a masquerade ball and the harlequin, and its round flower may suggest a pomegranate. These are fan readings, not official statements.

Evolution notes

Sprigatito evolves into Floragato at level 16, and Floragato into Meowscarada at level 36.

In the games

Meowscarada is the final form of Sprigatito, the Grass choice among the trio of first partners that Clavell offers in Cabo Poco, and you get it by evolving Floragato in Scarlet and Violet, where it first appeared. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Liko's Meowscarada debuted in 'The Earthshaking White Zygarde', when her Floragato evolved mid-fight with the White Zygarde. It Terastallized for the first time in 'Eyes to the Skies Once Again (Part Two)', in Liko's battle against Roy.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia notes that no other fully evolved first partner Pokémon is lighter.
  • Its Grass and Dark typing gives it seven weaknesses, including a 4x weakness to Bug, the most among fully evolved first partner Pokémon.
  • Pokémon Sleep describes it as a talented magician that very occasionally tries a trick in its sleep, although its act rarely goes to plan.
  • Bulbapedia reads the Shiny colours of the whole Sprigatito line as the normal ones seen by moonlight, a fan reading that suits its phantom-thief air.
