Lore

Biology

Sprigatito is a pale green kitten, 0.4 m tall and 4.1 kg, with leaf-like marks ringing its pink eyes and nose and a tuft of fur on its chest. The Pokédex says its fur has a plant-like make-up, and Bulbapedia says this lets it soak up sunlight and moisture, so it washes its face often to keep from drying out. Rubbing its paws together releases a sweet aroma that the Pokédex says mesmerises anyone nearby and grows stronger in sunshine.

Behaviour

Sprigatito is fickle and craves attention, and sulks if people ignore it. Bulbapedia says its scent can make foes stop fighting, and that it spreads the scent around while it sleeps, which may help others relax.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet you receive Sprigatito from Clavell at Cabo Poco as a first partner Pokémon.

Powers

Its Ability is Overgrow, which strengthens Grass moves when it is low on HP, with Protean hidden, which changes its type to match each move it uses. It starts with Scratch, Leafage and Tail Whip, then learns Bite, Hone Claws, Magical Leaf, Quick Attack, Seed Bomb, U-turn, Slash and Energy Ball, and finally Play Rough at level 36. Its best stat is Speed at 65, with 61 Attack.

Name origin

Sprigatito may combine 'sprig' and the Spanish gatito, 'kitten'. The Japanese name Nyahoja (ニャオハ) may blend nyā, the sound of a cat, with the Spanish hoja and the Japanese ha, both meaning 'leaf'.

Design inspiration

Sprigatito appears to be a long-haired kitten, or a baby Iberian lynx. Its tufts and collar may recall the fleur-de-lys that heraldry shows growing from a cat's head, and its scent-rubbing may come from the way cats rub against things to mark territory and companions. These are fan readings, not official statements.

Evolution notes

Sprigatito becomes Floragato at level 16.

In the games

Sprigatito is the Grass choice among Paldea's three partner Pokémon, alongside Fuecoco and Quaxly, and Scarlet and Violet are where it first appeared. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Liko's Sprigatito debuted properly in Pokémon Horizons in 'The Pendant That Starts It All (Part One)', the first partner she gets from the Indigo Academy. In the music video 'Biri-Biri', Nemona's Sprigatito is shown fully evolved into a Meowscarada.

Fun facts

  • Its Pokédex says it smells sweet, yet it cannot learn Sweet Scent.
  • It was the first Generation IX Pokémon revealed to the public, in a Pokémon Presents video on 27 February 2022.
  • A short bonus clip shown after a Pokémon Journeys episode featured a Sprigatito, the first Generation IX Pokémon ever seen in the anime.
