Lore

Biology

Covered in rectangular scales, Skeledirge is a large red crocodilian, 1.6 m tall and 326.5 kg. Its white belly with black side stripes looks like an open jacket over a shirt, and the white marking on its head resembles a lute. It usually walks on all fours but can stand on its hind legs. The Pokédex reports a rumour that the bird on its head was born when the fireball Skeledirge had as Crocalor gained a soul; Bulbapedia says the bird is a separate, independent being.

Behaviour

Bulbapedia calls Skeledirge's personality meddlesome yet caring. It says listeners to its singing feel warm and fulfilled inside and lose the will to battle. The bird on its head sometimes pecks at its jaws, supposedly to clean its teeth.

Habitat

The Pokédex names no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it does not appear in the wild and is obtained only by evolving Crocalor.

Powers

Its signature move is Torch Song, a blast of raging flames sung like a tune that raises its Special Attack; Bulbapedia says no other known Pokémon can learn it. It also uses Shadow Ball, Hex, Flamethrower, Overheat and Will-O-Wisp. The Pokédex says its flames exceed 3,000 °C (5,400 °F). Its Ability is Blaze, with Unaware hidden. With base HP 104, Defense 100 and Special Attack 110 it is a sturdy special attacker.

Name origin

Skeledirge may combine 'skeleton' and 'dirge', a song sung in mourning. The Japanese name is Laudbon (ラウドボーン), possibly laúd (the Spanish lute), 'loud' and 'bone'.

Design inspiration

Skeledirge resembles a crocodile with a calavera-style skull pattern, dressed like a singer or conductor. Bulbapedia links it to Iberian crocodile legends, notably the Drac de Na Coca, a figure whose mounted remains show a bare skull that may explain the skeletal look; the creature also features in fiery street festivals, which may explain the Fire type. The bird may come from the trochilus, a legendary bird said to clean a Nile crocodile's teeth. These are fan readings, not official statements.

Evolution notes

Crocalor evolves into Skeledirge at level 36.

In the games

Skeledirge is the final form of Fuecoco, the Fire choice among the first partner Pokémon, and in Scarlet and Violet, where it first appeared, you get one by evolving Crocalor. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Roy's Skeledirge debuted in 'Don't Give Up, Crocalor!', when his Crocalor evolved in a rematch with Drayton, and it also Terastallized into a pure Fire type before that episode ended.
