Dipplin official artwork

Dipplin is a Grass/Dragon-type Pokémon, the Candy Apple Pokémon, number 1011 (#1011) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 9 and comes from the Paldea region. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 9.7 kg.

Dipplin is two wyrms sharing one apple: its head is the fore-wyrm, its tail the core-wyrm, and the pair help each other out. Of Applin's three evolutions, it is the one that still looks most like Applin.

Lore

Biology

Dipplin is a small wormlike creature that lives in an apple, 0.4 m tall and 9.7 kg. It is really two creatures in one: the head poking out is the fore-wyrm and the tail the core-wyrm. Both are light green with yellow-green undersides. The fore-wyrm has two big yellow eyestalks shaped like leaves and a thin horn-like protrusion, and the core-wyrm's tail has two leaf-like features.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says the two wyrms share one apple and cooperate. Bulbapedia says they make syrup to coat their apple in layers; its sweet smell captivates opponents, and they can engulf and hinder them with it.

Habitat

The Pokédex names no habitat, and in the games it does not appear in the wild.

Powers

Its Abilities are Supersweet Syrup, which lowers the evasion of adjacent opponents once per battle, Gluttony, and the hidden Sticky Hold. Syrup Bomb, a signature move shared only with Hydrapple, damages the target and lowers its Speed over the next three turns. It also learns Dragon Pulse, Energy Ball, Recover and Dragon Tail. With 110 Defense it is a sturdy but slow Grass and Dragon type.

Name origin

Dipplin may combine the prefix di- (double), 'dip' and Applin. The Japanese name is Kamicchu (カミッチュ), which may combine ka (果, fruit), kamitsu (花蜜, nectar), chū (虫, bug or worm) and Kajicchu, Applin's Japanese name.

Design inspiration

Dipplin appears to combine a worm in an apple with a pun on wyrm, a kind of dragon, matching its Dragon type. It also looks like a candy apple, and its Shiny colouring may recall caramel or golden apples. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Applin evolves into Dipplin when given a Syrupy Apple, one of its three branches alongside Flapple and Appletun. Dipplin evolves into Hydrapple by levelling up while knowing Dragon Cheer.

In the games

In Kitakami, Applin can evolve into Dipplin, which also appears in 4-star Tera Raid Battles; this all comes from The Teal Mask, where it is number 36 in the Kitakami Pokédex. Without that expansion it can be obtained by trade or from Pokémon HOME, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Dipplin debuted in 'Roy is Crocalor, and Crocalor is Roy!', owned by a candy apple shop owner, and one appears in a flashback in 'Mochi Mayhem!'.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says it is the only Pokémon that needs a TM to evolve, because it cannot learn Dragon Cheer any other way.
  • Dipplin could benefit from a held Eviolite when it debuted in The Teal Mask, even though Hydrapple had not been released yet.
  • Its base Speed is the lowest of any Generation IX Dragon type.
