Lore

Biology

Iron Leaves is a green-and-grey quadruped, 1.5 m tall and 125 kg, with long metal horns, a silver snout with a red blaze and bright red digital eyes. Three green armour circles ring its neck, with leaf-shaped blades on either side, and its legs look like knee-high green boots with red diamonds at the knees. Bulbapedia says it powers down when it sleeps, the red glow on its head, leaves and legs turning black.

Behaviour

The few eyewitness accounts the Pokédex mentions say its glowing blades cut big trees and boulders into thin strips. Bulbapedia adds that the lit parts of its head and leaves can become ghostly swords in a fight.

Habitat

The Pokédex names no habitat, and in Scarlet and Violet it does not appear in the wild.

Powers

Its Ability Quark Drive raises its highest stat on Electric Terrain or when it holds Booster Energy. Psyblade, a move only Iron Leaves learns, is a physical Psychic move whose power jumps to 120 on Electric Terrain. It also uses Leaf Blade, Sacred Sword, Close Combat, Megahorn and Swords Dance. With base Attack 130 and Special Defense 108 it is a sturdy, hard-hitting physical attacker.

Name origin

Its name is meant literally. The Japanese name is Tetsunoisaha (テツノイサハ), from tetsu no isaha (鉄の斑葉), 'iron mottled leaves'.

Design inspiration

Iron Leaves is based on Virizion, a design credited to Takao Unno, reimagined as a metallic, futuristic stag or antelope. Bulbapedia names no further inspirations.

In the games

Iron Leaves was released alongside Walking Wake in the Poké Portal News Tera Raid events of Scarlet and Violet, and is number 242 in the Blueberry Pokédex. Its Pokédex entries were placeholders until The Indigo Disk. In Pokémon Masters EX it forms a sync pair with Hilda, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

Fun facts

  • Before its reveal, the Violet Book carried a sketch of an imaginary creature like it, blending Cobalion, Terrakion and Virizion, the Swords of Justice.
  • Although it is part Psychic, Psyblade is the only damaging Psychic-type move it can learn.
  • Bulbapedia says that for a spell after version 1.2.0 and before The Teal Mask, it was the last Pokémon in the National Pokédex, the only non-Legendary, non-Mythical one ever to hold that spot.
  • It is the heaviest Grass type of Generation IX.
