Lore

Biology

Dottler has an orange, blob-like body almost entirely covered by a shell of yellow triangular panels, with blue circles at the corners that flash from top to bottom. Only its face, with cyan crystalline eyes and a V of blue feelers, and four blue feet show. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 19.5 kg. Bulbapedia says the shell is so heavy it stops Dottler getting to food and water, leaving only very small breathing holes.

Behaviour

Dottler barely moves, yet it is very much alive. The Shield Pokédex says that while it develops inside the shell, it watches the world outside with its psychic senses and prepares to evolve.

Habitat

In Sword and Shield it lives on Route 5, at Giant's Cap, Giant's Mirror and Stony Wilderness, and appears in Max Raid Battles on the Isle of Armor. It is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

It has the same Abilities as Blipbug: Swarm, Compound Eyes and the hidden Telepathy. It learns Confusion, Reflect and Light Screen when it evolves from Blipbug, and Calm Mind and Iron Defense by TM. With 80 base Defense and 90 Special Defense it is a sturdy wall.

Name origin

Dottler may combine 'dot' and 'Doppler radar'. The Japanese name is Redomushi (レドームシ), perhaps from 'radome' (the dome that shelters a radar antenna) and tentōmushi ('ladybird').

Design inspiration

Dottler may be based on a ladybird pupa and a radome, which fits its category name. The eyes look like laboratory goggles too, and its faceted shape and light-up blue dots may recall a disco ball. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Dottler evolves from Blipbug at level 10 and into Orbeetle at level 30.

In the games

Dottler can Dynamax in Sword and Shield, its first games.

In the anime

Dottler debuted in the film 'Secrets of the Jungle' and first showed up in the series in 'Curtain Up! Fight the Fights!', under a Trainer. Two Trainers' Dottler also appear in the miniseries Pokémon: Twilight Wings, in 'The Gathering of Stars'.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says its shell closely resembles a gyroelongated pentagonal pyramid, a polyhedron.
  • It is tied with two other Pokémon as the shortest Psychic type introduced in Generation VIII.
  • Its French name Coléodôme mixes coléoptère ('beetle') with radôme, and its German name Keradar mixes Käfer ('beetle') with Radar.
