Lore

Biology

Blipbug has five body segments, a dark blue top to its head, a beige face and large reflective eyes that look like glasses. It is 0.4 m tall and weighs 8 kg. Its body is covered in sensitive hairs, and the Shield Pokédex says it uses them to assess its surroundings. Bulbapedia says the yellow tuft on its blue collar looks like a bow tie and that its eyebrow-like markings give it a permanently surprised look.

Behaviour

The Sword Pokédex calls Blipbug a constant collector of information: very smart, but not at all strong.

Habitat

The Shield Pokédex says it is often found in gardens. In Sword and Shield it lives on Routes 1 and 2, at Giant's Cap and in the Slumbering Weald, and on the Isle of Armor. It is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet and in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Swarm boosts its Bug moves when it is low on health, and Compound Eyes raises its accuracy; the hidden Ability Telepathy stops allies' attacks from hurting it. It starts with Struggle Bug and can inherit Sticky Web or Infestation through breeding. With 25 base HP and 20 Defense it is built to evolve rather than to fight.

Name origin

Blipbug may combine 'blip' (a dot on a radar screen, or the beep a radar makes when it picks up a target) with 'bug'. The Japanese name is Sacchimushi (サッチムシ), perhaps from satchi ('to sense'), 'search' and mushi ('bug').

Design inspiration

Blipbug may be based on a ladybird larva. Its glasses-like eyes and bow-tie tufts also echo the stereotypical 'nerd', which could tie in with 'bookworm', either a bookish person or an insect that burrows into books. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Blipbug evolves into Dottler at level 10, gaining the Psychic type, and Dottler becomes Orbeetle at level 30.

In the games

Blipbug is found on Routes 1 and 2 in Sword and Shield, its first games.

In the anime

Blipbug debuted in the film 'Secrets of the Jungle' and made its animated series debut in 'Reunion at the Ancient Castle!'.
