Lore
Biology
Dragonair is 4 m long and 16.5 kg. Bulbapedia describes sky-blue scales, a white underside, a small white horn and a stylised white wing on each side of its head, with three blue crystal orbs: one on the neck and two on the tail.
Behaviour
Dragonair is a rare Pokémon. The Pokédex says it gives off a gentle aura, has been seen flying even though it has no wings, and that some say seeing it fly through the sky at the start of the year brings good health all year.
Habitat
The Sword Pokédex says it lives in pristine oceans and lakes, and its habitat category is Water's Edge.
Powers
Dragonair can have Shed Skin, with Marvel Scale hidden. The Pokédex says it stores enormous energy and releases it through the orbs on its neck and tail, which alters the weather nearby. It learns Rain Dance, Twister, Aqua Tail, Dragon Rush, Dragon Dance and Outrage.
Name origin
Dragonair may combine 'dragon' with 'air', 'debonair' or 'lair', the traditional home of a dragon. The Japanese name is Hakuryu (ハクリュー), which may come from 白竜 hakuryū ('white dragon').
Design inspiration
Atsuko Nishida designed Dragonair. It looks modelled on sea serpents and ryu, and Bulbapedia notes that the small wings on its head echo Hermes, the Greek god whose sandals and hat were winged. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Dragonair evolves from Dratini at level 30 and into Dragonite at level 55.
In the games
Dragonair is the middle stage of the Dratini line, obtained in Red and Blue by evolving Dratini. In Scarlet and Violet it lives at Casseroya Lake, in South Province Area Six and in 4-star Tera Raids. In Legends: Z-A it is found in five Lumiose districts, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds 4-star Dragon-type wild zones in Hyperspace Lumiose.
In the anime
Clair's Dragonair is her last Pokémon in her Gym battle against Ash in 'Better Eight Than Never'. In 'On Olden Pond', a Dragonair living in a lake turns out to have rescued Mr. Saridakis long ago, and when it saves him again he drops his plan to build a resort there.
