Lore

Biology

Eelektrik is 1.2 m long and weighs 22 kg. It is a blue-black eel with a beige underbelly, a round, toothy, leech-like mouth with red lips, and eyes ringed in yellow. Beige fins extend above and below its head, three yellow circular organs sit on each side of its body, and a red tail fin looks like a fan.

Behaviour

Eelektrik is a vigorous hunter with a big appetite. Spotting prey, it coils straight around it and shocks it with the organs on its sides.

Habitat

Bulbapedia says Eelektrik dwells in caves and marine environments. In Black 2 and White 2 it is found in Seaside Cave.

Diet

Eelektrik is a carnivore, and the Black 2 and White 2 Pokédex says the hunt ends with a chomp.

Powers

Eelektrik's only Ability is Levitate. It fights with Spark, Discharge, Thunderbolt and Wild Charge, powers itself up with Coil, and learns Crunch the moment it evolves.

Name origin

Eelektrik may combine 'eel' and 'electric'. The Japanese name is Shibibeel (シビビール), which may combine shibire ('numbness') or shibire-unagi ('electric eel'), biribiri (the sound of an electric shock) and 'eel'.

Design inspiration

Yusuke Ohmura designed the line, and Bulbapedia says Eelektrik was inspired by a large eel he fished from a river, with the aim of capturing its 'strong but disgusting' quality. Its toothed mouth may draw on the lamprey, and its blue and yellow colours resemble those of the ribbon eel.

Evolution notes

Eelektrik evolves from Tynamo at level 39, and into Eelektross if a Thunder Stone is used on it.

In the games

Eelektrik is reached by evolving Tynamo in Black and White, its first game. In Scarlet and Violet it swims in the North, South and West Paldean Seas and appears in 4-star Tera Raids. In Legends: Z-A it is available by evolving Tynamo, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Eelektrik first appeared in the opening of the two Victini films. Its TV debut was in 'Cilan and the Case of the Purrloin Witness!', where a Trainer's Eelektrik, competing in a cruise-ship tournament called the Marine Cup, lost to Ash's Pikachu.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Oricorio and the Tynamo line are the only Pokémon listed in each of the three Pokédexes in Scarlet and Violet.
  • In Japanese, lampreys are called yatsume-unagi, 'eight-eyed eels', and Bulbapedia suggests the spots on Eelektrik's sides may allude to a lamprey's gill slits.
  • Unlike a lamprey, which has a single nostril, Eelektrik has two, Bulbapedia notes.
