Lore

Biology

Tynamo is 0.2 m long and weighs 0.3 kg. It is a white, eel-like Pokémon with dark oval eyes, a red mouth shaped like a four-pointed star, and a wavy yellow stripe along a tapering body with a long fin membrane. The Pokédex says it has an organ that generates electricity, and it discharges it when in danger.

Behaviour

Tynamo travels in schools, because a single one can manage only a weak shock. The Pokédex says groups gather to unleash one powerful shock together.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat, but Bulbapedia notes that merchandise artwork and several TCG illustrations show it swimming in or leaping out of water. In Unova it is found in Chargestone Cave, and in Black 2 and White 2 also in Seaside Cave.

Powers

Its only Ability is Levitate, which evades Ground moves. It attacks with Spark and Charge Beam and also knows Thunder Wave. Its best base stat is Speed 60, but it is mainly a stepping stone to Eelektrik.

Name origin

Tynamo may combine 'tiny' or 'tyke' with 'dynamo'. The Japanese name is Shibishirasu (シビシラス), which may combine shibire ('numbness') or shibire-unagi ('electric eel') with shirasu ('whitebait').

Design inspiration

Yusuke Ohmura designed Tynamo and its evolutions, and Bulbapedia says Tynamo in particular was meant to resemble the larval stage of an eel, called a leptocephalus. It may also draw on the electric eel (in fact a kind of knifefish) or on a lamprey larva.

Evolution notes

Tynamo evolves into Eelektrik at level 39.

In the games

In Scarlet and Violet, Tynamo swims in the North and West Paldean Seas, shows up in 1-star Tera Raids, and lives at Kitakami's Oni Mountain and Chilling Waterhead and in several Terarium biomes. In Legends: Z-A it is in Bleu District's Wild Zone 10, and the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose. Its first game was Black and White.

In the anime

In 'Dazzling the Nimbasa Gym!' a female Tynamo first appeared in the anime as Elesa's last Pokémon against Ash. Elesa calls her the 'Electric Queen' and her strongest Pokémon, but Pikachu still wins. Multiple Tynamo also appear in the two Victini films.

Fun facts

  • In Scarlet and Violet, Tynamo is the only Electric type with none of Rest, Substitute, Protect, Endure and Sleep Talk in its learnset, though Legends: Z-A later lets it learn Protect.
  • Its base stat total of 275 is the lowest of any Electric type in Generation V.
  • In the manga Pokémon Adventures, his grandfather, an artist, gives a young Hugh a Tynamo, and a later chapter shows it has grown into an Eelektross.
