Lore
Biology
Eiscue is 1.4 m tall and weighs 89 kg. It has a black and white penguin body with light blue accents, flippers, and a long antenna-like hair sticking out of the ice cube on its head. Under the ice is a light blue face with white eyes and a worried expression. The Pokédex says its head is sensitive to heat, and that the ice tastes faintly salty.
Behaviour
Eiscue is easygoing and, Bulbapedia says, stays calm when it washes up somewhere new. The Pokédex says it is actually a poor swimmer, and that on hot days a group will press their ice cube heads together to cool each other down.
Habitat
In Scarlet and Violet it lives in Violet's North Paldean Sea and North Province Area Three, while Scarlet players must trade for it.
Diet
It fishes by dangling an ice ball on the tip of its single hair into the sea, though the Pokédex does not say what it catches.
Powers
Its only Ability is Ice Face, which Bulbapedia says no other Pokémon can have. It starts in Ice Face, where the ice absorbs the first physical hit, then breaks into Noice Face, dropping to Defense 70 and Special Defense 50 but rising to Speed 130; snow restores the ice. It attacks with Freeze-Dry, Weather Ball and Blizzard.
Name origin
Eiscue may combine German Eis ('ice') with 'ice cube'. The Japanese name is Korippo (コオリッポ), which may blend kōri ('ice') with rippō ('cube').
Design inspiration
Eiscue looks like a penguin whose head is an ice cube. It may also recall the great auk, an extinct flightless North Atlantic bird that floated with its head above water and was hunted for fish bait. These are fan readings.
In the games
Circhester's Ice-type Gym Leader Melony uses an Eiscue in Shield, the only one of the Sword and Shield pair where it is wild. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
A group of Ice Face Eiscue debuted in 'Grabbing the Brass Ring!', where one got lost and flicked into its Noice Face a couple of times before getting home.
Fun facts
- In Sword and Shield, a glitch meant that if Rollout hit Eiscue, the damage multiplier could also carry over to its other moves, as it could with Mimikyu; version 1.3.1 fixed it.
- It shares the Penguin Pokémon category with Piplup and Prinplup.
- In Pokémon Adventures, a crowd of Eiscue turns up to watch Melony's Mr. Rime perform.
