Lore

Biology

Electivire is a large humanoid, 1.8 m tall and 138.6 kg, with yellow fur striped in black, no visible neck, red eyes and bulbous antennae. The pattern on its back looks like an electric outlet, and its two black tails end in red tips like open wires. Blue sparks crackle between its antennae as its charge builds.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Electivire pays no heed to enemy attacks: it charges in, presses its tails to the foe and releases its voltage, or grips a tail to power an electrified punch. When it is excited it thumps its chest, and each thud sets off thunder and a shower of sparks. Its voltage rises with its pulse in battle.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by transfer or trade, and The Indigo Disk lets you evolve Electabuzz into one and features it in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raids. Bulbapedia lists it as unobtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Diet

Bulbapedia says it usually feeds on electric currents, though the anime shows one eating fruit in 'Home is Where the Start Is!'.

Powers

Its Ability is Motor Drive, which absorbs Electric moves and raises its Speed, with Vital Spirit hidden. It learns Thunder Punch, Thunderbolt, Discharge, Thunder, Flamethrower and Rock Slide. With 123 base Attack and 95 base Speed it is a strong physical attacker.

Name origin

Electivire may combine 'electric' or 'electricity' with 'wire' or 'live wire'. The Japanese name is Elekible (エレキブル), perhaps eleki and 'cable'.

Design inspiration

Given its shaggy look, Electivire may be based on the Namahage, straw-caped demons played by men in masks, and a yeti is another possibility. Its Motor Drive Ability and design resemble an electric motor, and its horns may echo Tesla coils. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Electabuzz evolves into Electivire when traded while holding an Electirizer.

In the games

Electivire first appeared in Diamond and Pearl. In the Mystery Dungeon games Explorers of Time and Darkness it manages the link shop in Treasure Town, and in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia it is a boss used by Heath.

In the anime

Gary Oak's Electivire debuts in 'Home is Where the Start Is!' against Ash's Pikachu. Paul's Electabuzz is revealed to have evolved into one in 'Casting a Paul on Barry!', and it develops a strong rivalry with Ash's Infernape.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says no other known Pokémon could have Motor Drive before Generation V; Zebstrika, which shares its Thunderbolt Pokémon category, later joined it.
  • Before Platinum, just four Generation IV Pokémon explicitly required a Generation III game: Electivire, Magmortar, Gliscor and Tangrowth. Elekid and the Electirizer came only via a FireRed or LeafGreen dual-slot link, bar a special Battle Revolution one.
  • Voldon wears an Electivire costume in Pokémon Battle Revolution.
