Lore
Biology
Magmortar is a large, egg-shaped, red and yellow striped Pokémon, 1.6 m tall and 68 kg, with yellow tube-like arms, a big flame on its head and more red flames along its shoulders and tail. Its claws can retract into its skin, forming a pressurised cannon. The Pokédex says living in a crater gave it an organ like a magma chamber.
Behaviour
Magmortar inhales deeply to push the fire in its belly hotter, and its body turns whitish when it fires. The Pokédex says its arm starts to melt if it fires a whole barrage, and it avoids fireballs when hunting prey. Some factories rely on its flames to process metal.
Habitat
The Pokédex gives no habitat and says it lives in volcanic craters. In Scarlet and Violet it is a Pokémon of The Indigo Disk, where you evolve Magmar or meet it in 5-star and 6-star Tera Raids, and it is not obtainable in Legends: Z-A.
Powers
Its Abilities are Flame Body and Vital Spirit, which is hidden. It learns Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Lava Plume, Fire Punch, Thunderbolt and Thunder Punch. With 125 base Special Attack and 83 base Speed it is a powerful but slightly slow special attacker.
Name origin
Magmortar may combine 'magma' and 'mortar', the artillery weapon. The Japanese name is Booburn (ブーバーン), perhaps from booby and 'burn'.
Design inspiration
Hironobu Yoshida designed Magmortar. It looks like a beefed-up take on the Karura, the bird-like mythical being behind Magmar's design, with an arm-cannon twist. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Magmar evolves into Magmortar when traded while holding a Magmarizer.
In the games
In Super Mystery Dungeon, Magmortar and four Magmar are the bosses at Fire Island Volcano, and in Pokémon Ranger: Shadows of Almia one guards the red circuit ball. It debuted in Diamond and Pearl.
In the anime
Paul's Magmortar made its series debut in 'Pedal to the Mettle!', already evolved from his Magmar.
