Lore

Biology

Magmar is a bipedal red and yellow Pokémon, 1.3 m tall and 44.5 kg, with a puckered tan beak, two flame-topped lumps on its forehead, scaly arms, a row of red spikes down its back and a flame on its tail. Black shackles circle its neck and ankles, and its heat gives it an orange glow.

Behaviour

The Pokédex says Magmar dislikes cold places and blows scorching flames to make its surroundings warm enough, and that the heat waves from its fiery bursts set nearby grass and trees alight. It dispatches its prey with fire, then regrets burning it to a crisp. Magmar are feared as one cause of fires.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is mountain, with entries placing it in volcano craters. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in the Indigo Disk's Coastal and Savanna Biomes and Torchlit Labyrinth. It is not obtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Abilities are Flame Body and Vital Spirit, which is hidden. It learns Flamethrower, Fire Blast, Lava Plume and Fire Punch. With 100 base Special Attack and 93 base Speed it is a quick special attacker.

Name origin

Magmar may combine 'magma' and 'fulmar', a seabird that spits oil to defend itself. The Japanese name is Boober (ブーバー), perhaps from 'booby', another seabird, and a twist on 'burn'.

Design inspiration

Magmar seems to blend a booby or duck with the fire salamander of legend. It may be based on the Karura, a bird-like, fire-breathing being from Japanese Buddhist mythology. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Magby evolves into Magmar at level 30, and a Magmar traded with a Magmarizer in hand turns into Magmortar.

In the games

A Generation I original, Magmar lives in the Pokémon Mansion on Cinnabar Island, where in the international Red and Blue it was a Blue exclusive.

In the anime

Blaine's Magmar debuts in 'Riddle Me This' and fights Ash in his Gym; Bulbapedia says the battle shows a very well-trained Magmar can turn aside Electric moves with a blast of superheated air. Gary's Magmar loses to a Heracross in 'The Ties That Bind', despite the type advantage.

Fun facts

  • Magmar's original Generation I art gave it four fingers, as did its sprites for the first three generations, Yellow excepted.
  • An Ultra Moon entry says Magmar in Alola are hardier than those elsewhere.
  • Its Japanese name shares the ブー (boo) in Electabuzz's, though the two come from different origins.
