Magby official artwork

Magby is a Fire-type Pokémon, the Live Coal Pokémon, number 240 (#0240) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 2 and comes from the Johto region. It is 0.7 m tall and weighs 21.4 kg.

Magby is the Live Coal Pokémon, a small, timid baby so hot that, the Pokédex says, a small enough pond dries up if it falls in. You can read its health from its fire: yellow flames mean it is well, black smoke means it is tired.

Lore

Biology

Magby is a bipedal red baby, 0.7 m tall and 21.4 kg, with a flame-shaped yellow marking on its belly, a black collar, a rounded yellow beak and lumps on its head. The Pokédex gives its body temperature as around 600°C (1,100°F), and embers drip from its mouth and nose as it breathes.

Behaviour

Magby is small and timid, and the Pokédex says flames leak from its mouth and nose when it gets excited or surprised. At the end of the day it soaks in magma to recover from the day's fatigue. A Magby with flames dripping from its nose has a cold, and the cure is a good rest in some magma.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is mountain, and its entries place it in volcanic craters; Bulbapedia notes it can also be seen in towns. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in the Indigo Disk's Coastal and Savanna Biomes and Torchlit Labyrinth. It is not obtainable in Legends: Z-A.

Powers

Its Abilities are Flame Body and Vital Spirit, which is hidden. It learns Ember, Flame Wheel, Fire Punch, Flamethrower, Lava Plume and Fire Blast. Its base Attack of 75 and Speed of 83 are good for a baby.

Name origin

Magby may combine 'magma' with 'baby' or 'booby', a seabird. The Japanese name is Buby (ブビィ), perhaps booby plus baby.

Design inspiration

The spike on Magby's back gives it the look of a baby iguana, and its face may recall hyottoko masks, which show a man puffing fire through a bamboo tube. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Magby evolves into Magmar at level 30.

In the games

In Legends: Arceus, Magby can be found around Firespit Island in the Cobalt Coastlands. It first appeared in Gold and Silver as one of the Generation II baby Pokémon.

In the anime

Magby debuted in the short 'Pikachu & Pichu' as a friend of the Pichu Brothers. In 'You're A Star, Larvitar!', a Trainer works to get his Magby to evolve into Magmar before the Silver Conference, and succeeds.

Fun facts

  • A Crystal entry says that when many Magby appear, it heralds a volcanic eruption.
  • In the Spaceworld '97 demo it appears to have been a baby Magmar called Bubyi (ブビィ).
