Lore
Biology
Tangrowth is a large black Pokémon wrapped in a mass of blue vines, with saucer-like eyes peeking out and stubby black feet tipped with red. Its two blue arms have three fingers each, made from vines that can stretch a long way; the fingers are fully red on a female and only red-tipped on a male. It stands 2.0 m tall and weighs 128.6 kg.
Behaviour
Tangrowth sits still, looking like a large shrub, and ensnares prey that strays within reach unawares. Bulbapedia notes it eats fruit too. The Pokédex says its vines grow fastest in warm weather, hiding even its eyes, so it tears bits off when they get too long.
Habitat
Bulbapedia calls it very rare in the wild, living in temperate grasslands and swamps. It is not available in Scarlet and Violet or Legends: Z-A, but can be found in Legends: Arceus, Brilliant Diamond and Shining Pearl, and Sword and Shield.
Powers
Tangrowth's Abilities are Chlorophyll and Leaf Guard, with Regenerator hidden. It lashes out with Power Whip, drains health with Giga Drain, and puts foes to sleep with Sleep Powder. With base Defense 125 and HP 100 it is a sturdy Grass type, while its Special Defense is only 50.
Name origin
Tangrowth may combine 'tangle' and 'growth'. The Japanese name is Mojumbo (モジャンボ), perhaps from mojamoja ('shaggy') or Monjara plus 'jumbo'.
Design inspiration
Bulbapedia links Tangrowth to the mystery under Tangela's vines (see Tangela), and adds a shaggy caveman, because it evolves using Ancient Power like the prehistoric-themed Yanmega and Mamoswine. It also notes the Pokédex's binding vines may refer to thigmotropism, how climbing plants coil around what they touch. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Tangrowth evolves from Tangela by levelling up while knowing Ancient Power.
In the games
Professor Tangrowth, a supporting character in Pokémon Pokopia, guides Ditto and appears in every area except Palette Town. The species itself first appeared in Generation IV.
In the anime
Tangrowth made its anime debut in 'Promoting Healthy Tangrowth!', where it tried to save a dying tree that the forest depends on, and Ash and his friends helped. In the film 'Zoroark: Master of Illusions', Tammy's Tangrowth helps in her flower shop.
Fun facts
- Until My Pokémon Ranch arrived, Tangrowth could only be had by moving a Tangela through Pal Park and evolving it, which Bulbapedia says is unique among Generation IV Pokémon.
- An early Spaceworld '97 build suggests Tangrowth may be based on a Pokémon called Jaranra, with a small dark body and a smiling mouth under curly vines.
- Professor Tangrowth alone has the Appraise specialty among Pokopia's Pokémon, Bulbapedia says.
