Lore

Biology

Electrike is 0.6 m tall and 15.2 kg, a green, dog-like Pokémon with yellow markings. A big crest on its head carries lightning-shaped marks, its snout has a yellow blaze, and a yellow stripe runs along its back. Every leg has a spike, with longer ones on the hind legs, and four fangs are visible when it opens its mouth.

Behaviour

Electrike is built for speed. The Pokédex says air rubbing against its fur produces static electricity, and that it uses the charge to stimulate its leg muscles for explosive acceleration. It makes a crackling sound when it runs.

Habitat

Grassland, in the Pokédex's habitat categories. It is not in Scarlet and Violet. In Legends: Z-A it is found in Wild Zone 5 in Bleu District and in Lysandre Labs in Magenta District.

Powers

Electrike has Static, which can paralyse attackers on contact, or Lightning Rod, which draws Electric moves to it, with Minus hidden, which boosts its Special Attack when a friend has Plus or Minus. It bites with Thunder Fang, builds power with Charge, and rushes in with Wild Charge at the cost of recoil. Base Speed and Special Attack of 65 each make it quick but small.

Name origin

Electrike may combine 'electric' and 'lightning strike', and may also involve 'tyke', a word for a mongrel dog or small child. The Japanese name is Rakurai (ラクライ), which may come from rakurai ('lightning strike').

Design inspiration

Electrike looks like a puppy, and Bulbapedia links it to the raijū, a Japanese yōkai: a lightning beast that can appear as several mammals, usually a wolf. This is a fan reading.

Evolution notes

Electrike evolves into Manectric at level 26.

In the games

Mauville City's Gym Leader Wattson uses an Electrike in Emerald, and it first appeared in Ruby and Sapphire. It is unobtainable in Scarlet and Violet, but the Mega Dimension DLC adds it to Hyperspace Lumiose.

In the anime

Wattson's Electrike appeared in 'Watt's with Wattson?', comforting him after Ash beat him in a Gym battle. Jaco's Electrike in 'The Electrike Company!' learned to control its power with help from Ash and friends and evolved into Manectric.

Fun facts

  • In English Electrike and Jolteon share the 'Lightning Pokémon' category, though the Japanese words differ: inazuma for Electrike and kaminari for Jolteon.
  • In 'The Electrike Company!', brushing an Electrike with metal brushes lets the metal carry its charge, which shocks the person holding them.
  • In Arceus and the Jewel of Life, the hypnotised Damos has five Electrike hit Arceus with Shock Wave, in the film's original timeline.
