Lore
Biology
Entei is a massive, brown-furred quadruped, 2.1 m tall and 198 kg, with a long grey plume of smoke streaming along its back. A red faceplate shaped like a star or fins frames its face, a horseshoe-shaped grey plate covers its muzzle, and a yellow crest rises from its forehead. The Pokédex says its fire is hotter than a volcano's magma and consumes everything it touches.
Behaviour
Entei races headlong across the land because, the Pokédex says, it cannot restrain its own power. Bulbapedia notes the claim that it brings the warmth of summer. In Pokémon Sleep it leaks flames from its mouth as it dozes, and on waking it sweeps over the land in fiery waves much like an eruption.
Habitat
The Pokédex habitat list puts it in grasslands. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by Pokémon HOME transfer or trade, or in The Indigo Disk by luring it to East Province Area Three with a snack from Snacksworth.
Powers
Entei has the Ability Pressure, which makes opponents use extra PP on moves aimed at it, and the hidden Ability Inner Focus, which stops flinching. Its fire moves include Ember, Flame Wheel, Lava Plume, Fire Blast and the volcano-sized Eruption, backed by Fire Fang and Crunch. Its 115 base Attack makes it a strong physical attacker, and Calm Mind can raise its special stats.
Name origin
Entei may combine 炎 en ('flame') and 帝 tei ('emperor'), echoing Yándì, the Flame Emperor of ancient Chinese legend. It may also involve 炎天 enten ('blazing heat'). The Japanese name is Entei (エンテイ).
Design inspiration
Muneo Saitō designed Entei, and has described starting from a hairy, rock-like body with volcanic smoke and a dignified, bearded 'king'. He kept the lion feel but chose a silhouette that could read as a dog, a cat or neither. The faceplate and crest may suggest lava, and East Asian guardian lions such as the komainu and shīsā, or Bali's Barong, may also have played a part; these are fan readings. In the Johto legend its Fire type stands for the blaze that burned the Brass Tower.
In the games
Entei is a roaming beast in Gold and Silver, where it debuted, with only one in the game. Salon Maiden Anabel uses one in Emerald's Battle Frontier, and in Colosseum a Shadow Entei waits in Mt. Battle. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Entei debuted in the film Spell of the Unown: Entei, in which an illusory Entei becomes the guardian of Molly Hale after she wishes on the Unown. Its first main-series appearance is 'Entei at Your Own Risk', where it escapes Nelson's Misdreavus by using Roar.
