Lore

Biology

Suicune is a slim, blue, leopard-like quadruped, 2.0 m tall and 187 kg, with white diamond-shaped markings and a white face and underside. Its thick purple mane resembles the aurora borealis, two white streamer-like tails wave forward, and a hexagonal blue crest sits on its forehead. Bulbapedia adds that it can walk across water.

Behaviour

Suicune is heroic and calm in danger, as the anime shows. The Pokédex says it roams the world in search of clean water to purify, and that north winds seem to blow wherever it appears. In Pokémon Sleep it sleeps deeply by clean water. Bulbapedia says Crystal describes it as the closest of the beasts to Ho-Oh, with a cooperative bond with Unown.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat list puts it in grasslands, though it travels wherever water needs purifying. In Scarlet and Violet it arrives by Pokémon HOME transfer or trade, or in The Indigo Disk by luring it to Casseroya Lake with a snack from Snacksworth.

Powers

Suicune has the Ability Pressure, which makes opponents use extra PP on moves aimed at it, and the hidden Ability Inner Focus, which stops flinching. It uses Water Pulse, Surf and Hydro Pump, bites with Ice Fang, speeds up its side with Tailwind and turns special hits back with Mirror Coat. With base Defense 115 and Special Defense 115 it is a sturdy defender.

Name origin

Suicune may combine 水 sui ('water'), 水晶 suishō ('crystal', also pure quartz) and 君 kun ('monarch' or 'baron'). The Japanese name is Suicune (スイクン; strictly transliterated Suikun).

Design inspiration

Muneo Saitō designed Suicune, adding leopard-like traits after Entei turned out lion-like, and has said the design came together easily. The qilin may be an influence, given its slim body, horn-like crest and water-walking, and its leopard link and north wind may nod to Fūjin, the Japanese wind god, with the aurora mane perhaps referencing Aurora and Boreas; these are fan readings. In the Johto legend its Water type stands for the rain that ended the Brass Tower fire.

In the games

Crystal makes Suicune its star, with a final showdown in the Tin Tower, and it first appeared in Gold and Silver as a roaming beast. Palace Maven Spenser uses one in Emerald's Battle Frontier, and in Colosseum a Shadow Suicune belongs to Venus. It is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Suicune debuted in 'Don't Touch That 'dile', glimpsed by Ash as a silhouette of blue energy on a lake island. In 'Healing the Healer!' Goh catches one to save it from Pokémon hunters, and it chooses to stay with him while roaming the world.

Fun facts

  • Of the Legendary Pokémon who star on game boxes, Suicune is the only one with a base stat total below 600, says Bulbapedia.
  • In Crystal you can spot Suicune in Cianwood City, near Mt. Mortar on Route 42 and beside the National Park gate on Route 36, and each time it hops away and the event resets, imitating its roaming in Gold and Silver.
  • No other Shadow Pokémon has a varying moveset; it normally knows Surf, but Hydro Pump if snagged in Deep Colosseum.
