Lore

Biology

Fomantis is a plantlike Pokémon, 0.3 m tall and 1.5 kg, with dark pink eyes and a pale pink body striped in darker pink. Bunches of light green leaves frame its face, a small dark green bulb on its head gives off a pleasant aroma, and four white-tipped leaves hang from its collar, the front pair acting as scythe-like arms. Bulbapedia says it stores energy from sunlight in order to evolve.

Behaviour

During the day Fomantis spreads its leaves wide in the sun and sleeps peacefully, then wanders at night looking for a safer spot to sleep. Bulbapedia says it never stays in one place for more than a day. Anything that disturbs its sunbathing is attacked fiercely. The Pokédex says regular sunlight gives it vivid colouring.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat list. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in South Province Area One and Tagtree Thicket, in 1-star Tera Raid Battles, and across much of Kitakami in The Teal Mask.

Powers

Its Ability is Leaf Guard, which stops status conditions in strong sunlight, with Contrary hidden. It starts with Fury Cutter and Leafage, then learns Razor Leaf, Slash, X-Scissor, Synthesis and Leaf Blade. Its Attack of 55 is its best stat, which is modest, so it is mainly a stepping stone to Lurantis.

Name origin

Fomantis may combine 'faux', French for both 'false' and 'scythe', with 'mantis'. The Japanese name is Karikiri (カリキリ), which may blend kari ('pseudo-'), kari ('to prune') and kamakiri ('praying mantis').

Design inspiration

Fomantis may draw on the orchid flower together with the orchid mantis, turning the relationship around: the orchid mantis imitates the flower, while here a plant looks like a mantis.

Evolution notes

Fomantis evolves into Lurantis at level 34, but only if the level-up happens during the day.

In the games

Fomantis first appears in Sun and Moon, on Route 5 and in Lush Jungle. It is found in Sword and Shield through the Expansion Pass and in Scarlet and Violet, including The Teal Mask, but is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Several Fomantis debuted in 'Currying Favor and Flavor!', where Ash and Mallow found them sleeping while searching for a Mago Berry.
