Lore

Biology

Lurantis is a plantlike Pokémon that resembles a mantis, 0.9 m tall and 18.5 kg. Its pink-and-white head has red-tipped ear-like extensions and light red eyes, and a skirt-like frill makes it look dressed in a long-sleeved dress. Its slender white arms finish in big red sickle blades. The Pokédex says it gathers light and fires beams that can cleave thick metal plates.

Behaviour

Lurantis passes for a flower in both looks and scent, and uses that to draw foes in for a surprise attack. Keeping its colours brilliant takes detailed grooming, and the Pokédex says some collectors enjoy the work as a hobby.

Habitat

The Pokédex gives no habitat list. In Scarlet and Violet it is found in the North Province, around Casseroya Lake and Socarrat Trail, and in Kitakami's wilds and Timeless Woods.

Powers

Its Ability is Leaf Guard, which stops status conditions in strong sunlight, with Contrary hidden. Solar Blade was its signature move in Generation VII, and it now also fights with Leaf Blade, Petal Blizzard, X-Scissor and Knock Off. Base Attack of 105 makes it a hard-hitting physical Grass type.

Name origin

Lurantis may combine 'lure', 'allure', fleur (French for 'flower') and 'mantis'. The Japanese name is Lalantes (ラランテス), which may combine ran ('orchid') and a corruption of 'mantis'.

Design inspiration

Lurantis may draw on the orchid flower together with the orchid mantis, turning the usual disguise on its head so that a mantis imitates a flower. Bulbapedia adds that its look also recalls a kimono, the sort worn by Obon dancers.

Evolution notes

Fomantis evolves into Lurantis at level 34 during the day.

In the games

A Totem Lurantis guards Mallow's trial in Lush Jungle in Sun and Moon, where the species debuted, and beating it earns a Grassium Z. It is found in Sword and Shield through the Expansion Pass and in Scarlet and Violet, but is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Totem Lurantis debuted in 'Currying Favor and Flavor!', challenging Ash in the Lush Jungle trial before Litten defeated it. In 'Suffering the Flings and Arrows!', Jessie also got a Lurantis out of the Rocket Prize Master.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia suggests its Hidden Ability Contrary, which reverses stat changes, could nod to its design flipping the orchid mantis disguise.
  • In poke.si's data the Totem Lurantis stands 1.5 m tall and weighs 58 kg, much bigger than the normal Lurantis.
  • In Pokémon Adventures, Moon summons a Totem Lurantis with Mallow's soup for training, and Moon's Mareanie finally defeats it in 'Flash and Cosmog's Secret'.
