Lore

Biology

Froslass is a regal, floating figure, 1.3 m tall and 26.6 kg, with a hollow kimono-like body, a red band like an obi, flared sleeves and a head with holes like a mask topped by two ice-crystal horns. Mega Froslass grows far taller, floats on a flat cloud and has a mask-like head that trails behind it like long hair.

Behaviour

Froslass is said to knock on doors during terrible blizzards, and Ultra Moon warns that you should not open up. The Pokédex says it freezes foes or hikers it likes and carries them back to its den, lining them up neatly as decorations. A Legends: Arceus researcher notes legends that it places curses on misbehaving men.

Habitat

Bulbapedia places it in snowy caverns. In Scarlet and Violet it lives on Glaseado Mountain and in Dalizapa Passage, and in Legends: Z-A in Wild Zone 20 and in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

Diet

Sword's Pokédex says its favourite food is frozen souls.

Powers

Froslass has Snow Cloak, with Cursed Body hidden. It learns Hex, Destiny Bond, Will-O-Wisp, Shadow Ball and Aurora Veil, and its base Speed of 110 makes it quick. Mega Froslass, from Froslassite, keeps Ice and Ghost, gains Snow Warning and 140 Special Attack, and uses cold air infused with spectral energy that can freeze wind or flames.

Name origin

Froslass may combine 'frost' and 'lass'. The Japanese name is Yukimenoko (ユキメノコ), which may blend yuki (snow), yuki-onna (the snow woman of folklore) and menoko (an old word for a girl).

Design inspiration

Froslass most likely draws on the yuki-onna, a snow-woman spirit from Japanese folklore, and its body shape also recalls a kokeshi doll. Mega Froslass's taller, more regal look may echo the Western fairy tale The Snow Queen. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Froslass evolves only from a female Snorunt exposed to a Dawn Stone, which fits it being female-only.

In the games

In PokéPark Wii, Pikachu fights Froslass in the Iceberg Zone to help settle her quarrel with Glalie, and in Mystery Dungeon: Explorers of Time and Explorers of Darkness the rescue of Scizor in Crevice Cave ends with a battle against one. The species first appeared in Diamond and Pearl, and Mega Froslass arrived in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Froslass made her series debut in 'The Drifting Snorunt!', where she kidnapped Dawn's Piplup and Team Rocket's Meowth to make Ash and his friends save her Snorunt from a poacher. In 'A Real Rival Rouser!' Paul used a Froslass against Ash at the Lily of the Valley Conference.

Fun facts

  • No other Ghost type shares Froslass's place in the Fairy Egg Group, and its evolutionary line holds the only Ice types there.
  • Bulbapedia lists it as the only Ice type whose body is classed as a head and arms.
  • Froslass's SoulSilver Pokédex entry is missing its final full stop, an error that HeartGold avoids.
  • In Black and White, the offensive-nickname filter stopped an English-language Froslass being traded on the GTS unless it had a nickname.
