Lore

Biology

Snorunt is a small, black, egg-shaped Pokémon, 0.7 m tall and 16.8 kg, with light blue eyes, wide teeth and a yellow cloak that makes its outline a triangle. Several entries say it can survive temperatures as low as -101°C (-150°F).

Behaviour

Snorunt travels in groups of around five, and one entry says several shelter beneath enormous leaves and live together peacefully. In snowy regions, seeing them late at night is said to mean snowfall by morning. Folklore says a home they visit prospers for generations, and Legends: Arceus describes a tradition of leaving a lump of pure-water ice at the front door for them.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is caves, and Ruby's entry says that in snowless seasons it hides in the depths of caverns, among stalactites and stalagmites. In Scarlet and Violet it lives on Glaseado Mountain, in Dalizapa Passage and in Kitakami, and in Legends: Z-A in Wild Zone 12 and, in the Mega Dimension DLC, Hyperspace Lumiose.

Diet

Several entries say it survives by eating snow and ice.

Powers

Snorunt has Inner Focus or Ice Body, with Moody hidden. It learns Powder Snow, Ice Shard, Icy Wind, Frost Breath, Ice Fang and Weather Ball, and reaches Blizzard at level 60. With every base stat at 50, it is an even, unremarkable first step to either evolution.

Name origin

Snorunt may combine 'snow' and 'runt'. The Japanese name is Yukiwarashi (ユキワラシ), literally a snow child spirit, and may also involve zashiki-warashi, a house spirit.

Design inspiration

Snorunt seems to take after yukiwarashi or yukinko, Japanese snow spirits that look like children, and its Pokédex entries about house luck echo the zashiki-warashi, a spirit said to bring fortune to families. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Snorunt evolves into Glalie at level 42. A female Snorunt can instead become Froslass if a Dawn Stone is used on it.

In the games

Players find Snorunt in Shoal Cave at low tide in Ruby and Sapphire, its first games, and Pokémon XD lets you snag one as a Shadow Pokémon in Phenac City.

In the anime

Snorunt first appeared in the anime in 'Let It Snow, Let It Snow, Let It Snorunt!', where it stole Ash's Badges and then joined his team. In 'The Drifting Snorunt!', Ash's Chimchar and a wild Froslass rescued one from a poacher.
