Glalie is a Ice-type Pokémon, the Face Pokémon, number 362 (#0362) in the National Pokédex. It was introduced in Generation 3 and comes from the Hoenn region. It is 1.5 m tall and weighs 256.5 kg.

Glalie is the Face Pokémon, a floating rock wearing a grinning mask of ice that the Pokédex says is harder than steel. Legend says it was born when a boulder on a frozen mountainside took in the suffering and regrets of a climber left stranded there.

Lore

Biology

Glalie is a round, black rock core, 1.5 m tall and 256.5 kg, covered in ice with holes through which blue eyes and flat teeth show, and it has two black conical horns. The Pokédex says the rock beneath is not particularly hard, but the ice it freezes from the moisture in the air is.

Behaviour

Glalie freezes its prey in an instant and, according to different entries, devours or leisurely eats it. Ultra Sun says it prefers prey that is already frozen, such as Vanillite. In the anime it floats freely through the air and can even be ridden.

Habitat

The Pokédex habitat is caves. In Scarlet and Violet it lives on Glaseado Mountain and in 5-star Tera Raid Battles, and in Legends: Z-A you get it by evolving Snorunt, or in the Mega Dimension DLC's Hyperspace Lumiose.

Powers

Glalie has Inner Focus or Ice Body, with Moody hidden. It starts with Sheer Cold, learns Freeze-Dry on evolution, then Frost Breath, Weather Ball, Crunch and Blizzard. Mega Glalie, from Glalitite, has the Ability Refrigerate and 120 base Attack and Special Attack; its jaw is dislocated, so it spills blizzards from its broken mouth but can no longer eat as it used to. With its base stats evenly spread, Glalie is an all-round Ice attacker.

Name origin

Glalie may combine 'glacier' and 'goalie'. The Japanese name is Onigohri (オニゴーリ), from oni (demon), kōri (ice) and goalie; Akihito Tomisawa, a former Game Freak staff member, said he coined it because the Pokémon resembled a goalie's mask.

Design inspiration

Glalie may be modelled on human features such as a cold, distant face, and also looks like an ice hockey mask and a hailstone. Its horns and teeth may reference the oni or the Namahage, demon-masked men in northern Japan. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Glalie evolves from Snorunt at level 42.

In the games

In Ruby and Sapphire, its first games, the only way to get a Glalie is to evolve a Snorunt. In Sword and Shield it can also be found on Route 10 and at the Lake of Outrage.

In the anime

Ash's Snorunt evolved into Glalie in 'Rhapsody in Drew', and it stayed with Ash until the Ever Grande Conference was over. In Horizons, Coral's Glalie first appeared in 'Reunion at the Ancient Castle!' and was later shown to be able to Mega Evolve.

Fun facts

  • Glalie shares its entire set of base stats with Phione.
  • Of the Mega Evolutions that arrived with Omega Ruby and Alpha Sapphire, Mega Glalie alone has a single type.
  • At 256.5 kg it was the heaviest Ice type of Generation III.
