Lore

Biology

Frosmoth is 1.3 m tall and weighs 42 kg. It is a white moth with a thick, ruff-like upper body, deep blue eyes with long lashes, a blue jewel between them and two long antennae that sense air currents. Its large wings are grey with white rims, and the Pokédex says they are colder than 180 degrees below zero Celsius (290 below zero Fahrenheit).

Behaviour

Frosmoth guards the fields and mountains it flies over, whipping up blizzards with its wings to drive off anyone who damages them. It sends its scales drifting on cold air so that they fall like snow.

Habitat

The Pokédex says it flies over fields and mountains. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in the snowy north of Paldea, around Glaseado Mountain, and Bulbapedia also lists Area Zero.

Diet

Clean meltwater is its favourite thing to drink, according to the Violet Pokédex.

Powers

Its Ability is Shield Dust or the hidden Ice Scales. It starts out knowing Icy Wind and learns Aurora Veil, Blizzard, Bug Buzz, Tailwind and Quiver Dance. Its base Special Attack of 125 is the highest of any Ice or Bug type from Generation VIII, and being Ice and Bug leaves it four times weak to Fire.

Name origin

Frosmoth may be a blend of 'frost' and 'moth'. The Japanese name is Mothnow (モスノウ), which may blend 'moth' and 'snow'.

Design inspiration

Frosmoth may be modelled on a moth, probably a giant silk moth, and Bulbapedia suggests the Ourapteryx genus, including the 'snow swallowtail', for its colours and tailed wings. Its Fire weakness could be a joke on 'like moths to a flame'. These are fan readings.

Evolution notes

Frosmoth evolves from Snom when levelled up with high friendship at night.

In the games

Players meet Frosmoth in Max Raid Battles in Sword and Shield, the games that introduced it. In Scarlet and Violet it also shows up in 4 and 6 star Tera Raids, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.

In the anime

Frosmoth debuted in 'Chasing to the Finish!' as Lyla's Pokémon. Melony owns one in Pokémon: Twilight Wings and Pokémon Adventures.

Fun facts

  • Bulbapedia says Frosmoth is the only Ice type filed under the multi-winged body style, though it shows a single pair of wings, perhaps as a nod to moths having two pairs.
  • In POKÉTOON's 'The Legend of Capsakid', a Frosmoth is among the Pokémon that Akira's Capsakid enrages with a spicy bite.
  • A Frosmoth appears in the very first Horizons episode, 'The Pendant That Starts It All (Part One)'.
