Lore
Biology
Snom is 0.3 m tall and weighs 3.8 kg. Its round white body is mostly hidden under a see-through shell of icy spikes, with two black eyes and round mouthparts showing at the front and four short legs underneath. The Pokédex says its insides amplify the frigid air from the snow it eats, and it uses that cold air to make the spikes on its back.
Behaviour
Snom prefers soft, freshly fallen snow and will munch upwards through the snow of a mountain, aiming for the summit. Bulbapedia adds that a startled Snom burrows into snow, and that in Pokémon Camp it is only satisfied by huge helpings.
Habitat
The Pokédex has it eating snow on mountains. In Scarlet and Violet it lives in the Dalizapa Passage and on Glaseado Mountain, and an in-game trade in Cortondo also gives one.
Diet
Snow, especially soft snow that has just fallen.
Powers
Its Ability is Shield Dust, which blocks the extra effects of moves that hit it, or the hidden Ice Scales, which halves damage from special moves and which Bulbapedia says only Snom and Frosmoth can have. Its whole level-up list is Struggle Bug and Powder Snow, and its base Speed and Attack are under 30.
Name origin
Snom may combine 'snow', 'worm' and 'nom', slang for eating. The Japanese name is Yukihami (ユキハミ), which may blend yuki ('snow') with hami ('eating').
Design inspiration
Snom may take after a jewel caterpillar, and perhaps the larvae of Arctic Gynaephora moths; the Arctic woolly bear moth can survive 70 degrees below zero Celsius (94 below zero Fahrenheit) while dormant. These are fan readings.
Evolution notes
Snom evolves into Frosmoth when it levels up with high friendship at night. Bulbapedia says it is the one Pokémon introduced in Generation VIII that evolves by friendship.
In the games
Players find Snom on Routes 8 and 10 and around the Lake of Outrage in Sword and Shield, the games that introduced it. In Scarlet and Violet it is wild in northern Paldea, and it is not available in Legends: Z-A.
In the anime
Snom debuted in 'Curtain Up! Fight the Fights!'. In 'Ice Battle! Cold-Eyed Grusha', a mound of Snom narrowly avoids being hit when Liko and her Pokémon swerve past it while riding a Cetoddle.
